On the one hand, it's 2 discs because of the hidden track in the pre-gap before track 1. On the other hand, according to Wikipedia at least, "Disc one of the CD release contains 10 minutes of hidden reversed samples of tracks from the disc in the pre-gap before the first track."
When I read that it was 75 minutes, I was going to say something about some Tool albums being nearly 80 minutes fitting on to one disc. But now I see Arcade Fire were going for a different kind of stupidity than I first thought.
On that note, why the fuck is Leaves Turn Inside You 2 discs when, last I remember checking, both could easily fit on one? Did Unwound want us to treat the discs like two separate albums? Was Kill Rock Stars unable to access/afford 80-minute discs?

The LONG, slow fade-out is a specialty of Autechre. Possibly their most sublime use of this technique is "Vletrmx21", which is the fourth and final track on the Garbage EP, which runs like 35-40 min overall so length-wise it's not that far removed from a standard album (and there have certainly been shorter albums).
With Autechre, the fade-out is not "the guy mastering the album just turning the mix down slowly in the last fifteen seconds", but is actually structurally integral to the song and album, as the point is usually that some machine or patch slowly breaks down, stops working, gets quieter. Autechre's crazy machinery has ground to a halt, once again.
Moreover (back to OP's thing), on the American "Tri Repetae++" collection, which presents the album of the same name--, + the Anvil Vapre EP + the Garbage EP, in that order, as a 2xCD, the above fade-out is the last bit of content in the release.

King of Limbs special clear LP. 45rpm, and records are like 10 inches in diameter so that it would fit on 2 records.
Really annoying.
>>61467943
Weezer's green album does this.
When I was a kid I had a paper route, and I somehow won a promotion or "did a good job" or somesuch, so I was entitled to pick out some swag. I chose a new pair of rollerblades in which I did the paper route, and also Weezer's green album. Once I understood that it was only 29 minutes long, I counted myself lucky that I had not spent my own money on it.
>>61466546
Probably a band/label choice to fit with the "double album" idea.

>They don't want to 3xCD

>This completely destroys the corresponding artwork, for which unofficial track names have been adopted, and which also represent the three platters and their respective tracks
>Having only 23 tracks instead of the correct 25 baffles me as a lad for a long time until I realize that this copy has been circumcised/mutilated

Oh you fugging, oh my fffffffffffffffffffffff
During web 1.0 days I got the basic idea that a song or two was missing, then I kind of forgot about it. Meanwhile the album itself really grew on me into how important it is to me, now. And I understood it was culturally important, too. I heard it in commercials, at art museums, on public radio, in part of a documentary about Amish life.
Eventually circa 2007 Youtube improved to the point that someone had uploaded Stone in Focus. I must have listened to it over a hundred times within the first two months. And I must have looked hankie up at some point, but then sort of forgot about it. And I only looked it up just now because of this rant I've been on.
I've just listened to Hankie for the first time in years. ffffffff

Dad actually worked as a touring musician for a few years in the 1970s. He and his bandmate put out one album and one single, played real shows, and had professional representation and a small road crew.
He emphasized that (their) manager always paid them, which was the important thing. But the manager would say stupid stuff that made for funny stories. Now I come to my point.
The manager would want to describe/bill smaller shows at coffee houses, student centers etc as "mini-concerts". Dad always hated that. It either is a concert or it isn't (for him). I don't know who won the billing fight though.
