Plastic recorders sound perfectly good when played well. In a medieval way. Historically they got switched out for flutes because they lack dynamic range. And things not intended as instruments like saws (bowed) or rotten-ass tree branches (didgeridoo) can be perfectly good instruments when used correctly.
