I've kinda tuned out when it comes to the emo revival, but considering I still enjoy some of the classics, I'm thinking I should give some new shit a listen.

What do you suggest? Does anything capture the magic of Algernon Cadwallader? Snowing? Early Look Mexico? That's the soundtrack of my highschool years, or something like that. I'm forgetting a lot of bands. And Braid. Remembered how good Braid is the other day.
>>
Snowing has to be the most overrated band of all emo
>>
>>61439895
thats not american football
close though
>>
>>61439904
Well if I had said American Football I'd have been lying, anon. My mother taught me to never lie.

/mu/ is known for it's lack of knowledge when it comes to emo. Snowing is hugely celebrated on this board despite their only half decent release being an EP. An EP which had two decent songs at most.

American Football is universally recognised as one of the greatest emo albums there ever will be, and quite frankly it is. Undisputedly. No band has ever come close to equalling the scope of their sound, their tone and range of emotion and their re-playability. The album only gets better with time and as more revival bands start cropping up, it's no wonder why. That single record they made in '97 just cannot be matched.

The only records that come close, come from the same family of musicians. Maybe you are just tired of hearing about it all the time, which is fine, but something are impossible to be overrated.
>>
>>61439904
I agree

>>61440038
I mean, keep in mind (and I'm just guessing) that most of the board members who listen to emo were like 5 years old when American Football, Promise Ring, and shit like that was coming out. Sure, that and Cap'n Jazz are classics. But I'm 25 and Snowing came up in my high school years, so contextually it's more 'classic' for a lot of my generation.

Don't get me wrong tho American Football is an amazing record, but I also really don't think it's that perfect either. Idk.
>>
>>61440038
>No band has ever come close to equalling the scope of their sound, their tone and range of emotion and their re-playability.
>The only records that come close, come from the same family of musicians
you cant seriously have this opinion
snowing is at least fun to listen to
american football is just derivative mediocrity
>>
>>61440173
>fun to listen to

So, only up-tempo and gang vocals are "fun"?. That's a crazy way of thinking. I've been with tons of people that go wild when Never Meant comes on. The vocal hooks and guitar parts really get people going, and with the nostalgia attached to them, they could play the most depressing song ever and people would still be going wild.

Of all the emo I've heard, and I make some effort to listen to a lot, Snowing was the most disappointing. I guess it's like with all things acclaimed on /mu/, you've always heard something ten times better than whats applauded here
>>
>>61440254
dude youre saying mu doesnt know anything about emo yet you drop
>No band has ever come close to equalling the scope of their sound, their tone and range of emotion and their re-playability.
that
>So, only up-tempo and gang vocals are "fun"?
no
i really cant picture what kind of person goes wild when never meant comes on
not really sure i want to
that last sentence applies just as well to american football as it does to snowing
>>
>>61440465
>i really cant picture what kind of person goes wild when never meant comes on

Then you've never been part of a scene, or toured in a small bus for a month straight and only had the same few playlists burned on CD's. American Football is such a connective band, anyone that holds the genre dear to them will be natural fans. It's also the most Honest record I've ever heard in the genre.

It is the essential album of the genre, no doubt about it. Even all the amazing midwestern stuff before it is STILL not as good. Mostly because the mid-western stuff really was just pop-punk
>>
>>61440465
Agreed again. Except sure, plenty of people including myself would go wild when Never Meant comes on.

>>61440254
Notice how you mention "Never Meant"....exactly....one song better than the rest. I still love their album, but AF clearly has a fanbase made up of many who only know that song.

And Snowing is def more than just gang vocals. I hate gang vocals but I get something out of Snowing still.
>>
>american football
>"emo"
>>
this recent "snowing is bad" meme is great when combined with "american football is the greatest emo album"
>>
I don't listen to much emo but I like Foxing a lot. The Albatross is their emo-sounding album; Dealer doesn't have much of the emo sound at all but is still very good imo

desu it's hard for me to find good "emo"

easy to come across shitty pop punk

and snowing is sooo boring
sonically bad, no redeeming qualities besides the decent lyrics
>>

>when combined with "american football is the greatest emo album"
>>
>>61440735
I'll check them out, I've seen that name a lot. Thanks.

>>61440769
I've stayed away because god I hate that fucking band name. But that is a very emo album cover, I love it. I always think it's SDRE when I see it.

Also what is it about the emo aesthetic that created quirky names like "empire! empire!". I'm trying to think of more examples, and I can't come up with any, but i know there are plenty. At least with song titles and lyrics.

>>61440796
It's just that I hear there's an "emo revival" but desu senpai, every time I check one of these bands out, THEY SUCK! It's like these music writers and emo fans stuck in the past won't let it go.

people who can't find good emo just aren't trying very hard

seriously, see whats in your local scene and find some rym lists/charts
>>
>>61440940
>hipsters and irony
you're right, i guess i just forgot that there are hipsters in the scene. i usually equate hipster with....well not with emo. of course emo was a different beast years ago. but now i feel like listening to emo is in no way hip, but i guess each scene is its own world with its own hierarchy.

actually let me just say - the worst, most meme-worthy friends i have are people who are still in the emo and 'punk' scene. their whole existence is irony. how empty. very clearly starved for attention. sad. i guess these sorts of band names make sense to me now.

Also isn't TWIABP supposed to be really good? I'm gonna check that out now. I listened to their first album or ep or whatever but I don't remember it.

This Empire! band seems pretty good, but eh I'd rather just listen to something I already know for that nustalgiah.

Also idk if Tigers Jaw counts as emo but I truly think their s/t album is god-tier
>>
>>61441180
emo was a hipster as fuck genre
>>
>>61441180
at least in the city i live in, the emo and hipster scene overlap with no divide. lots of house shows will have hipster acoustic / indie acts, emo, and even hardcore punk side by side

twiabp is alright but there are much better bands even for the postrock combo
listen to the newfound interest in connecticut for example
>>
>>61441206
For sure for sure, but is it still now? I feel like taking emo seriously now is almost like taking pop-punk seriously a.k.a. not hip at all
>>
>>61441247
hipsterism is all about not taking anything seriously
and thus emo goes well along
>>
>>61441225
Same as my city, sorta. At least when I was younger. Too much crap though. Too much christian hardcore where I live. It's sincerely the worst thing.
>>
>>61441247
kinda yeah
emo bands generally play with indie acoustic bands

and even more now since american football's reemergence / TWIABP breaking out of emo
>>
emo is dead who cares
just listen to old long gone bands and pretend nothing new comes out
>>
>>61441334
lol

not true

emo has a lot more influences to work with now, between all the mid-2000s math and 3rd wave post-rock and so forth

but yeah the 90s did "emo" better than anyone is today
>>
>>61441273
so that's why these people aggravate me so much. makes sense. i enjoy a fair amount of irony and not giving a fuck, but i am pretty sincere about my tastes

>>61441311
yeah idk, you're right. but either i'm an ultra-hipster or just a condescending asshole. bc while i would've been a part of that scene in the past, now i kind of look down on it as elementary. just my personal taste i guess. i'm enjoying listening to these old favorites right now, no shame. but overall these days I pretty much hate any band that would play at The Fest
>>
>>61441502
well there isn't really a big difference

hipsters don't give a fuck about anything and don't think anything is legitimately worthwhile so they just like what they like and what they happen to think is good

it's the same as not giving a fuck what others think and liking what you like, unless you're convinced you like things for objective reasons
>>
>>61441489
>but yeah the 90s did "emo" better than anyone is today
then why do you listen to these awful bands
youre right its not dead yet
how do we kill it

>>
>>61441560
>how do we kill it

>>
>>61441589

>>
>>61441560
there are good bands doing interesting things today, which i am glad exist

even if they don't do the "emo" core of emo as well as the OG bands did doesn't mean what they're doing isn't worthwhile in its own right
>>
>>61441599
>there are good bands doing interesting things today, which i am glad exist
like nouns?
>>
>>61441589
>>61441598
nouns is the only thing that makes me think maybe emo does need to die

they're just really terrible

they TRY to be something new and end up just being a new variety of trash
