The problem is that most of the famous female musicians aren't even writing or performing their own music. The majority of music is written and performed by men.
This is mostly because record companies know sex sells, so they only need to find semi-competent female musicians to sell their records, and if they can make feminists think they're strong empowered women or whatever, even better.

Most virtuoso musicians recognized today were born and raised during a time where women were not taught composition due to cultural attitudes. As a result we missed out on female virtuoso musicians from those ages.
I assume by virtuoso you mean preternaturally talented. We have scores of such women performing today, in classical and experimental circles.

there are two different things being mentioned here.
are we talking about virtuoso musicians, or are we talking about pop musicians. because in the current state of music, male or female, the former rarely bleed over into the latter.
