King Crimson for most of their good years.
They came into prominence at kinda around the same time, had their 'career changing album' in the same year, and then they both broke up.
The difference is of course KC got back together a bit earlier (broke up a bit earlier, too) and instead of continuing the rivalry PF went on to make a Rush copycat album before throwing in the towel and just doing their own thing for their last album.

Yea the Beatles/BBs rivalry is kinda exaggerated on /mu/. It was always more of a one-sided thing w/ Brian Wilson aspiring to be Paul McCartney. I mean The Beatles admired Brian, but they retained that level of commercial success while broadening their artistic horizons but Brian faltered commercially bc the people weren't ready, man. The Stones def became way more ambitious and successful so I'd say they fit as rivals yea.

But if you read any PF biography, you'll see that Roger really did put in a lot of the hard work in the early days, and although The Wall was very much his own project, there was a lot of tension caused by the fact that other band members just weren't stepping up.
