Does anyone else feel fucking stupid listening to lyrics about love and relationships? Or even worse, connecting the lyrics to a girl you talked to like twice that you're not even friends with because that's all you have?
What's some good music about never having a gf?
Nah
Lyrics don't have to always be relatable o situations that I've been in. otherwise that would be boring.
They just have to be good enough for me to be able to emphasise with the author and understand their story.

I know this feel, but it doesn't stop me from liking an album
For instance Pet Sounds is one of my all-time favorites but I never experienced teenage love

damn I feel the exact same way word for word
:/
I never take lyrics at face value. I always try to find what's hidden in the metaphors. Even if the artist never had an intention of writing it that way. For instance Prison Sex by Tool can either be about rape, or the philosophy of "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind".

When you're listening to Tool, just remember that they're not like other bands. Their music is incredibly artistic, almost to the point where you have to be paying complete attention to them to even remotely understand them. I remember listening to a song on Lateralus (though I can't remember what it was), where I thought a song was absolute bollocks during the listen. Then, I closed my eyes for a second, and all of a sudden the song had an entirely new meaning. It was insane the way Tool could just become something so different when you take a look into the music.
Another thing you should note about Tool is that it's easy to get a headache listening to them. Not because they're a bad band, but because of how many ideas their music is riddled with and how complex they are. Soon enough your head will fill to the brim and the rest will just sound like noise to you. Just turn it off and give it a listen the next day.
If you don't like the music, you'll definitely at least enjoy reading through the lyrics, and picking apart the song itself and all of the artistic values that go into making it the complexity that it is.
You shouldn't try to relate to lyrics that much.

I think the first guy's right; there's nothing special about tool. good lyrics tap into some sort of truth that's applicable to every situation, and there are tons of artists with good lyrics out there

Oh I think you have got the wrong idea! I fell in love with Tool a few years ago, their music is magic to me and has influenced me as far as writing, and especially drumming. (If I had to pick a spirit animal, it would be Danny Carey). But that's what I mean, their music has an insane amount of depth. One of my favorite acts. Glad to have found someone who as learned to swim better than I have!

It's completely up to the observer as to how they want to interpret lyrics. I like to think of Maynard as a poet before a preformer, therefore I look especially hard at his lyrics to pick out the subtle undertones and emotions and piece together what I think was really thought and felt at the time of writing. I think my first post sent the wrong impression. I think tool is an ocean of lyrical depth and themes.
