Ocean Beach
Red House Painters
1995, the year of Ocean Beach
Ocean Beach is great
Ocean Beach

i like stratosphere and down colorful hill a lot
recs please

Hello Stereogum writer
>>61379972
Red House Painters 1&2
Carry Me Ohio
Duster's other albums and Valium Aggelein, which I think had some of Duster's members
>>61379972
Love, Claire for super lo-fi slowness.
Braving The Seabed for space-rock influenced stuff.
And brush up on Codeine's Frigid Stars.
>>61380027
Valium Aggelein was in fact just Duster with a different name.
>>61380137
They switched instruments, too, I think
>>61379978
goddamn that site blows
Let's talk about slowcore one-hit wonders. Bands that had one great slowcore song and the rest were either shitty or another style

>rock-ish intro is @1:30 long
Anybody have some?
>favorite slowcore albums
Stratosphere, Moon Pix, and I Could Live in Hope. Frigid Stars and Songs About Leaving are also good but they are 2 sad for everyday listening
>favorite slowcore groups
Duster, Low, Codeine
does anything yo la tengo has done count as slowcore?
bright and floaty, but def slowcore

Some rare marks incoming.
>>61381061
I wouldn't call them slowcore, but I feel like somewhere in their discography they've touched on just about every indie subgenre, so yeah I would say they've done slowcore.
>you and your friend will never get drunk as skunks and high on darvon with him then give him a bath before he stumbles on home
>>61381272
yeah they definitely aren't a slowcore band, but i was just wondering if they had any songs that others considered to be slowcore-y
>>61381317
Maybe "and night falls on Hoboken"? That whole album always feels slow moving and hypnotic to me.
nth for Chokebore is fucking awesome
WITHOUT YOU WHAT DOES MY LIFE AMOUNT TO
>>61381369
yeah and then nothing is probably their most slowcore-like album. also summer sun. even when they're really slow and sad though i feel like their instrumentation is too interesting to fit the archetype of actual slowcore (not that i don't like it)

Bump with some Marks
> On Fire, Stratosphere, Down Colorful Hill, Rollercoaster, April
> Red House Painters, Galaxie 500, Duster, Codeine, Dirty Three (if they count)
Down Colorful Hill is seriously my favorite album
>>61381317
Maybe not exactly slowcore but this has a slow vibe
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNO4SY3wKDE
anyone wanna give me some recs?
I Love
galaxie 500
most of redhousepainters stuff
stratosphere by duster

Anyone else think Koutsos' drumming is severely underrated?
Drum rolls on Down Colorful Hill are amazing

I've seen several reviewers mention it before. He's the best slowcore drummer I know of. Always pretty creative with the slow tempos, drumming that slowly is very very difficult
>>61379923
it's a good album but seriously the songs on it cannot compare to the stuff on rollercoaster, dch, and even gotgh
>>61380097
braving the seabed is incredible
>>61381309
i want to be young mark's friend

glass, on the pavement, under my shoe
>>61381694
first time i heard dch i thought this song kept it from perfection
boy was i wrong
>>61384276
best low album everyone?
i'm a big proponent of curtain hits the cast
>>61385465
Ghosts of the Great Highway is probably the best Koz project overall but I wasn't counting it...
I used to like RHP's early stuff way more but lately I've been much into SKM, I feel like Ocean Beach is the best medium between his two styles: raw and noisy, but eloquent and pretty.
>>61385465
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ms9nps6Ad5E
>>61385515
yeah, gotgh is definitely his best imo
partially because duk koo kim is easily like, the best song ever
i have definitely been respecting ocean beach a lot more lately on recent listens
first time i heard it the amount of long folk-rocky stuff kinda turned me off because i'd rather listen to the more poignant acoustic stuff of skm or the more straight, powerful slowcore of early rhp. but i think the subtlety of those songs is brilliant. san geronimo is a really moving song, as always brilliantly composed
same with how "the light" has become one of my favorite songs on april (though lost verses and tonight in bilbao are monolithic)
>>61385581
i really need to listen to secret name. i've actually only ever heard curtain hits the cast, things we lost in the fire, i could live in hope, and the new one. thanks
>>61385608
Funny you'd mention San Geronimo - Lost Verses and Duk Koo Kim are my faves off their respective records too and I always lose it to Drop. (Over My Head is my other fave but that's because I like Prefab Sprout and shit like that.)
But honestly every song on that record is fucking great to me. Idk why, I don't even listen to much folk lol.
>>61385608
>>61385515
Any fellow Markfags dig Songs for a Blue Guitar?
I think Cool Choices by S could well be a better album than Songs About Leaving by Carissa's Wierd.
Any recommendations for this kind of sadness?
>>61385708
I fucking love it (Ocean Beach stan here). I only found out a few weeks ago that he did every instrument himself - completely insane.
>>61385708
i feel kinda mixed about it. stuff like "have you forgotten" is beautiful and i love it, but some of the guitar odysseys drag on a little long for me. maybe i'm just not giving it the time, like previously with ocean beach
>>61385707
yeah, lost verses and duk koo kim are both masterpieces that mark will be remembered in 2116 for, i bet. like seriously, the end of lost verses, holy shit—and ALL of duk koo kim's parts. melodically, harmonically, timbrally, and even lyrically sublime. as powerfully stated as they are subtle, a perfect balance.
>>61385748
jesus christ i didn't know that
why can't i be mark :(
any other Bluetile Lounge fans?

>>61385821
hell fucking yes. lowercase is the best slowcore album ever, probably (if we say that down colorful hill is more than just slowcore)
holy shit, i can't tell you how many time's i've just laid there and listened through it and it's still blown me away every time

Why live bros?
>>61385821
Holy crap that first album is good, thank you anon
Explain to me why this GOAT hasn't been posted ITT yet
>>61386129
Probably my favorite album of all time. I wish Jenn wasn't a lesbian
>>61385837
I go back and forth between the two albums, but they're definitely among the all time slowcore greats. Its baffling that they still seem to be so little known, its barely even a cult following.
>>61386093
You're very welcome anon. Hope you enjoy the second just as much.
>>61386093
dude, sit through it all and lose yourself. it's incredible.
bluetile lounge has some of the coolest vocals, some of the heaviest and most beautiful builds and climaxes (often totally unique timbres), and is very, very slow
very unique band
btw /slow/, have some recs:

Post yfw this fucking song

>>61386153
have you heard the later band of some of the members, mukaizake?
https://mukaizake.bandcamp.com/album/mapping-the-static
they were gods though. i heard bluetile lounge practiced for FOUR YEARS before ever performing or recording, so they could perfect what they were doing. it worked.
also, another rec for my /slow/bros:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhtDdotoNz8
listen to the whole album. gorgeous male/female vox
>>61386186
i listen to this song too much and it destroys me every time.
pic related for tfw
>>61386189
speaking of mukaizake i've never listened to their second lp until now and holy shit this is one of the best songs i've EVER heard
https://mukaizake.bandcamp.com/track/my-friend-flicker
maybe not /slow/ enough but still got the vibe
bump for slow

Do Arab Strap count as slowcore? What do you guys think of them?
>>61387033
First time listening to this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHM6cYQls6g
...and yes. and they sound pretty good.
This channel looks neat. I don't know many of these bands.

Also here is a nice find, I think.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0eu66kP264
My favorite slowcore band is Bedhead. I also really love Red House Painters and Low and Galaxie 500 and Duster like everyone.
More people should listen to Rivulets, Nina Nastasia, Movietone, C-Clamp, Cobolt, and Art Of Fighting.
Yeah Wings and Lower Plenty are cool newer slowcore-y bands.
