I hate the double tracking on all his vocals and how breathy he sounds

this is the main complaint I have, if it was just a single line it would be fine, but the white-noise element to his breathiness drowns out the melody sometimes.
I also feel it's sad music for the sake of sad music. Rather than emoting things, sufjan WANTS you to feel sad, he WANTS you to imagine close family dying. The fact it moves me so much is a testament to it's quality, but it feels contrived, music to be sad, not just emotional.
