spirit of eden and trout mask instantly come to mind

but it could probably be said of any challenging/experimental work worth its salt

definitely fugazi - repeater, i went into listening to it knowing about minor threat and expecting hardcore punk. then i listened to repeater and was so underwhelmed by turnover i didn't even get through the song
hilariously turnover is now one of my favourite fugazi songs

Death Grips really took a while for me to get into, but I found an appreciation for them after I got into Black Metal, Noise, and other more abrasive genres.

i've loved tmr since my first listen, however the more i listened the reasons for which i loved it changed.
at first i loved it because it was so rhythmically retarded and made no sense, i was laughing throughout the whole thing it was so ridiculous.
of course i listened more and the more i listened the more it weirdly seemed coherent, which is basically how it goes for everyone
>>
>>61335850

Bit of a wild shot in the dark here but you don't spend too much time exploring high art in general, do you?

You're a pretentious fuck. Just because you like shiitily composed music doesn't make you well versed in the arts.

>"lol what is dadaism never herd of dat shit xd"
>>
>>61336119
It is. The composition is sloppy, the only impressive aspect is that the band was able to play extremely sloppy but complex riffs to the t. Playing bad and fast music is impressive, but it still sounds like dick
>>

Definitely, glad I went back. Loveless is an all time favorite. Didn't really enjoy it until I listened to Souvlaki.

I've tried this album a few times, just can't really enjoy it.

Jesus Christ you pretentious fuck. Just because a specific concept of avant garde art exists doesn't mean that everyone likes it or sees value in it.
>>

>>
>>61336087

Don't throw the word "pretentious" around like some desperate self-assurance to yourself. It's a transparent crutch. I like both high and low art equally. I'm pretty temperate with my taste. But when you explore high art it helps you inform your ways of seeing and you are able to work with creative abstraction at far more nuanced levels than you were previously able. In fact exploring high art can give you tools to better read and resonate with low art too, so it's incredibly useful.

I'm not going to placate your intellectual misgivings. If you really want to be well-versed in the arts then you have to grind for it. Anything else is bullshit and quite literally pretense within itself.
>>
>>61336286
this is actually true
>>
>>61336293
And having an air of superiority because of a genre you appreciate that someone else doesn't is textbook pretentiousness. Just because I don't like it doesn't make me inferior, it means I don't like it.

>Just because I don't like it doesn't make me inferior, it means I don't like it.

You aren't inferior - just naive.

You are naive because you try to pass judgement on works of high art yet you cannot bring yourself to (rightly) admit that you barely invest any real time into high art to begin with.

What if you just haven't listened to it enough times?

but seriously, I find that most albums take a few listens before my enjoyment and thematic understanding of the art plateaus. Most of Death in June's ouvre, despite being almost compositionally regressive, takes a few listens to really feel.

>TMR is not high art you stupid faggot.

Yes, but there is a level of creative abstraction going on in that work that you're going to have an easier time with if you've been exploring high art in general. And it's really only popular music by technicality. That work and others like it could be considered high art in their own regard. The line blurs depending on the person. Charlie Chaplin could be said to have only ever made low art but he was also one of the greatest humanist forces that cinema has ever known and raised the bar in his craft in many inimitable ways. Things are never completely set in stone.

This is my AOTY after Holter and Geyser Bastion. I fully support the notion that this album needs a few listens to click. Whilst I truly enjoyed it my first listen, nothing stood out. There's barey any repeating lines or chorus'.

It's just Earl's life rapped out in one massive verse and it's genius. My favourite rap album ever.

The opening track especially pissed me off. It bored me. I got into Being There before I was able to get into this one. Guess I just had to ease myself into them. One day this album finally made sense to me and I love it. Solid 8/10 maybe even 9/10 in my opinion.

Nigga, you literally wrote out a paragraph that sounded like it came straight from Piero Scaruffi's blog, and you expect people to take you seriously

That's why I'm triggered
>>
>>61340855

>Nigga, you literally wrote out a paragraph

A few sentences that took no time at all? Come on.

And Pierro Scarrufi is so pretentious that he leaps through mental gymnastics to arrive at the critic being the ultimate artist. He's an ass.

Actually read that post again, it's pretty fair. How is the suggestion that it's useful to invest time in both low and high art pretentious? I think if you're really triggered it's an ego issue over the kind of erudition would like to think yourself as having vs. the real amount of grinding it would take to really warrant that feeling.
