What does "heavy" mean in the musical sense? What is a "heavy" guitar riff? Why do some people call fast metal such as Metallica "heavy", while others call slow, brooding metal such as Electric Wizard "heavy"?

yea man i think heavy is pretty much left up to the listener.. but i'm just like the ladder of your two examples, i'd call stuff like EW and Sleep "heavy riffage" while bands like dragged into sunlight, CC, indian, etc.. i'd call "intense as fuck"

to me heavy is anything that I find too abrasive to enjoy
Like, I used to find Neurosis heavy, but then I got into them and if you get into anything you become accustomed to it
So I guess Neurosis is the heaviest thing I enjoy
On the other hand I still find Converge's Jane Doe too abrasive and repellent to enjoy so I guess I'd consider that actually heavy
I realise this is dumb but it's how my brain works, sorry.
I don't really listen to metal, but it seems that "heavy" is interchangeable with "intense"
Heavy generally means stuff that have an oppressive sound, usually stuff along the lines of doom metal or swans which just hit you with loud, slow, and bleak blocks of sound.
