So I'm an older emo fan who lived through and loved the "second wave." I looked up some /mu/ best of charts to see what influences survived from that era. I found 5 charts and they were all mostly disappointing. The records hardly represent what I was into or what I thought was happening at all. No chart had Shotmaker, Portraits of Past, or UOA. In fact, virtually all Gravity bands were ignored except for Heroin. They were the best and most aligned with pure emo, but there's plenty of influence to go around on that roster.

I understand that there are skews to the emo genre and not everyone appreciates all the distinctive sounds, but when you're representing landmarks and innovations in 6 years of emo music, don't you have a responsibility to highlight the seminal albums from at least a few different subgenres other than what you and your friends liked?

This one highlights mid-paced sounds with cleaner vocals and not as much distortion. That's fine I guess, but I always thought this stuff veered a bit too close to post-hardcore rock. Then, it includes Cap'n Jazz and Get Up Kids, but leaves out any Braid album and puts in Midvale and Ember. Tragic.

This one's a bit more complete. Looks like whoever compiled this focused on the mid-late 90's era. I always thought Jawbreaker was just kind of melancholy pop punk. They have 2 Mineral albums and a Gloria Record album. Talk about redundant. Departures and Landfalls is a good inclusion.

No Shotmaker.

This one focuses on new stuff and not a lot of hardcore. I guess I can't complain too much. They even have Age of Octeen on here. I still get a little queasy whenever I see Nothing Feels Good though. Like after having way too much cotton candy.

This is mostly screamo and therefore mostly new shit. It has Indian Summer and City of Caterpillar, that's cool. But it could have had Merel, Heroin, Mohinder, Inkwell. Any of that shit. Whatever, screamo isn't much my bag anyway.
>>
>>61297211
When talking about that era you HAVE to include SDRE. The first one and the pink one were more influential, but How It Feels was their best IMO. But when I saw the video for Seven on 120 Minutes, it was really amazing. It was like nothing else out there. And those records had harder/faster parts. So people focus on them.
>>
>>61297390
Yeah it's fair to say that Diary had a bigger impact on music. Mineral in particular were clearly influenced by SDRE. But How It Feels is my favourite too, Pillars is one of the greatest album openers of the 90s.

When the chart gets closer to being good, it pisses me off more. Indian Summer, Max Colby, Native Nod, Heroin. Moss Icon. Great. They even posted the best Braid album. But, Swing Kids... I love Swing Kids. What they did was really fresh and new, but nothing they performed was intrinsically emotional. It was just hardcore with different rhthyms and fancier arrangements. And Hoover, while great, was really just Dischord post-hardcore artsy rock.

When they list Moss Icon and not UOA, it feels like when people praise Abraham Lincoln as a great president because it was so long ago that no one had a sense of what was going on, but when you mention FDR, they say "he wasn't all that great, he could have avoided that war if he wanted to" My point is: Tonie was the driving force in both bands, and they were both groundbreaking in completely different ways.

And once again: no Portraits of Past AND NO FUCKING SHOTMAKER. Why? How? Are there newer/better charts I haven't seen? How were these charts made? Was it a poll or just one person?

I could give some suggestions for a 90's emo poll if anyone's interested in voting, but I don't have image editing software.

There's room for some leeway there. I get it. Emo means different things to different people. But the line is a lot finer than some people think when drawing distinctions between acts like the appleseed cast and rainer maria and Radiohead and Grizzly Bear.

You don't strictly need image editing software for making charts.

That specific one could include Boilermaker - Watercourse imo.

Raw emotion or indie rock?
>>
>>61299649
Indie rock but I would like to listen to some pieces of raw emotion. Lo-fi and post-rock are my favorite genres if that helps. Thank you, Anon.
>>
>>61299626
Emo is such a broad genre. It depends on what your other musical interests are. It you like heavier stuff you could go the screamo route with bands like Orchid, PG99 or City of caterpillar. If you're into twlinkly pop you could go with American football, mineral, appleseed cast. There's also some early midwest emo from kinsella brothers like cap'n jazz, Joan of arc. I'm going to recognize endserenading by Mineral.

Indian Summer - Science 1994
Boys Life - Departures and Landfalls
Broken Hearts are Blue - The truth about love.

Do you like screamed vocals?
>>
>>61299703

merchant ships, this song is not entirely representative of their sound, since it's mostly spoken word and they're twinkly screamo but it is considered to be their most popular and for good reason.

September 9, 2001
Gary and I were skating at a hospital on top of a huge hill overlooking a valley
An ambulance came and took out a dead woman. Gary asked me why she wasn't moving or blinking. They hadn't closed her eyes yet
She must have died on the way. A car full of family and friends came in with the ambulance
They were all crying and hugging each other. One woman screamed hysterically and grabbed at the woman's body asking her to wake up
I had to tell Gary that her soul went to Heaven. I didn't believe a word of it, but I knew it'd be easier for him to understand
Two days from now, at 9 AM, the planes will hit the World Trade Center killing over 3,000 people
I will tell Gary that there is no God, and all of this is meaningless

I hate anime so much. All people who like anime are fucking indisputably autistic, and they're infecting this thread with this scene-tier shit. >tfw my brother downloaded original version of donnie darko when we watched it for the first time and my friends (who all watched shit directors cut) didn't share my enthusiasm for the intro song (directors cut had INXS- never tear us apart instead of awsome and fitting af Killing Moon)

Love pg99, orchid, hot cross and those types. Always thought they were considered screams/scramz. I thought scene core was different.
>>
>>61302568
personally i enjoy the second part of still bummed a lot, particularly how lazy without being even remotely psych it sounds. but why on earth you did picked the last and the least significant sentence in my such a very long post and responded to it >,<

>tfw i had shit taste in high school, and in the senior year mostly listened to some shitty nu-metal bands, but the fall of troy was a one exception from this. and i think for a long time my favorite band, i remember listening to 30 yrs war and it was fun hearing them play some of the same songs but without their technical abilities yet.

Screamo not screams. On mobile, autocorrect.

What is boilermaker missing/doing in that particular album that it has to be excluded from being emo?
It sounds like emo to me, or did they promoted themselves as post-hc?
Some bands bounced back and forth from including post-hc sounds in the 90s but that doesn't exclude them from the genre imo.

I think post-hardcore is less about musical style than it is about the scene you surround yourself with. So I went to Discogs and checked out their compilations. That's when shit got more confusing..

They did a bunch of them. Local music samplers, label samplers, radio samplers. On there with bands like No Knife, Knapsack, 100 Watt Halo and a bunch of bands I'd never heard of and most likely no one outside of SD had ever heard of. Open and shut, right? But then they were also on seminal emo comps like Eucalyptus on Tree, Direction on Polyvinyl (back when they were little), and the 1999 Che Fest comp. Their feet were squarely in both camps. My deduction is that Terfin gave no fucks about anything other than playing the music he liked. Nobody liked the Jade Shader. I'm sure he didn't care about that either.

>I think post-hardcore is less about musical style than it is about the scene you surround yourself with.
Fair enough, i thought that they were self labeled as post-hc or they actively rejected being considered as an emo act and i wasn't aware of it, since i rarely check rym/discogs tags.

>Terrin gave no fucks about anything other than playing the music he liked.
It seems like it, i think that emo it's more of an inclusive term than an exclusive one specially in that era.
