Actually write and don't be a pussy and chicken out. If you can't sit down for at least an hour a day and force yourself to solely write and nothing else you don't want it bad enough.

Have an interesting idea. If you don't, there's no point in making the song.

Write intentionally shitty songs until you get a feel for it.

Have bipolar, or do heroin, or both

It doesn't matter what idea you start with, as long as you develop it in an interesting way

People like dynamics and atmosphere

when it comes to singing having a good range and falsetto is a great asset
>>
-Start with the lyrics
-Carefully set the words to music, paying careful attention to the meaning of the words, and having that meaning reflected in the music whenever possible
-Keep your phrasing natural, read through the first line and imagine how it would sound. make the line of text into a line of melody.
-Once you have the line of melody and text, put some interesting chords underneath that accentuate the meaning, or perhaps make a clever play on the meaning.

For example: "We'll meet again"
- lyrics are: "I know we'll meet again, some sunny day...."
- on "day" there's a minor chord the first time around. A minor chord on the words "Sunny day" that doesn't sound quite right, right? correct. Its a play on the actual meaning. The singer may be singing "sunny day" but WW2 just happened and lots of things are still pretty fucked. Thankfully the line ends on major chords the next two times, emphasizing positivity and a happier closing.

Doing the opposite of the meaning of the text is just one way songwriters get creative.
Having ideas in the song relate to chords in the accompaniment is vital for a good song.

The song "Yesterday" by the beatles uses excellent relation of chords and meaning. same with "Walk on By" by Dionne Warwick.

The other method is to start with chords and write some appropriate lyrics to fit them. This method works, but doesn't yield as good results as the method above imo.

Learning music theory never hurt either. Part of music theory is the study of songwriting, looking at great songs and seeing how they work, and how to get the best out of your lyrics and make an effective song with emotional impact (if that's what you want to do).

Other misc tips:
- have a life and some actual experiences to write about
- write about what you know
- be careful with words that sound like other words.
- be careful to make sure the lyrics are clearly set so you can actually hear them.

misc tips continued
- practice. You will only get better. Your first few songs suck, thats just the way it is. Your songs will suck for years before you start improving.
- Play your songs on an instrument. Practice playing and singing them. Over time the songs will evolve and you'll learn the best ways to play things / sing things. You can take this experience and correct your song based on it.
The above can also lead you to having a set of originals you can play for friends or at concerts, if people care enough to listen. Or you can record them, or all 3.
- Learn lots of songs and sing them on your instrument. Learning the songs of others will help you expand the chords you know and you can see how real songs are structured, very beneficial.
- Dont force inspiration. If you dont feel like writing, dont write. You'll know when inspiration hits you and you start scribbling lyrics down at 2am. If you never feel inspired, try writing lines at the end of the day, just before bed: Form a line in your head. Think over and over it and hone it until its amazing, then write it down. Rinse and repeat until you have at least 20 lines, try to have a general topic or idea in mind. You can come back to these "lyrics" later and revise them, choose lines you like, omit lines you dont, add new ones if necessary, etc.
