What are some of the best uses of music in games you've seen?
There's a really good, really long, really, really depressing and atmospheric Cyberpunk mod called G-String which uses an obscure pop song from 1969 in one of the best ways I've seen in a game.

What would otherwise be a bog-standard fight suddenly turns into a western style gun battle with the music, which hammers in the themes of the game.

If anything, retro vidya soundtracks are the one kind of game OST that needs the least amount of context to appreciate. Castlevania, Mega Man, Sonic, Kirby, Double Dragon, Battletoads, Streets of Rage, Kabuki Quantum Fighter, Shinobi, Kunio-kun, Little Nemo Dream Master, Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Ninja Gaiden, Rocket Knight Adventures, Bangai-O, Gauntlet, fucking Space Harrier -- these are all, just off the top of my head, old games/series with music strong enough to stand on their own because the songs can be so damn catchy. Not everything from all of these titles are amazing, but they all have at least one or two songs that will get stuck in your head. These days, it feels like Nintendo are the only major developer intent on NOT making all their games OSTs sound like goddamn movie scores.
As for the Mighty Switch Force OST, nigga if you need context just pretend you're listening to some hot new band that grew up listening to Daft Punk, Justice and UK garage all day.

Fuck no. DMC3 is one of my favorite games ever but the OST is shit outside of like, 3-4 songs. DMC1 is the only DMC with a good OST.
