>>
>>61185741
It's a tube amp, it doesn't matter what it sounds like, you'll spend all your time taking pictures of it and posting on /mu/ to ever hear it.
>>
>>61185716

I was looking through this:

https://www.basicmusictheory.com/c-major-triad-chords

Which seems to work, not just sure if that's the logic behind it or even if it works on other scales
>>
>>61185736
Also shoegaze :^)
>>61185768
Just kidding pal, but I don't like the sound of those bottom flabby strings, it's really un-melodic to me...
>>
Does anyone have experience with very light cloth gloves for playing? Bass in my case. I think it would make sliding easier and help a bit with sweat on the strings and fretboard. Also, less strain on my fingers which would be nice. What kind of cloth would you go for in that case? Or is it a retarded idea in general.

hey guys, new to guitar. i'm looking for a tube amp with built in reverb / delay that can gig small shows for under around $200. i'd like it if it had perfect warm and bright cleans but also could go into death metal distortion when needed as in i play in blues and metal bands. i also need it to be quiet enough to play in my bedroom in my apartment so my neighbors or roommate don't hear it since my roommate has super good hearing. oh and i can only shop at GC and it needs to have an effects loop. thanks!

the consensus is that if you replace the tubes for 12au7s and jj6v6s (slightly more clean headroom) the amp can quite easily compete with a drummer

What's your excuse for not owning a Klon, the finest overdrive ever made?

To quote Nels Cline "“I've written about it before. It's an amp in a box. No more worries in the world of AMP DU JOUR about overdrive tone. It will always be OK. The Centaur will take care of it. Consumers: It's worth the wait to get one. I've had this thing for years now. What did I ever do without it? Let them poor boys hate, We outchea eating good yyeeerme"

I borrowed my friends for a bit today and recorded this on my cell phone.

>>
>>61186869
so sun kil moon? worth checking out what his gear is for albums like Songs For a Blue Guitar (rhp) and April and maybe Down Colorful Hill too. I would say you'd need a nice, washy overdrive pedal and maybe a good reverb as it has no built in pot, and the tube distortion tends to go harsh very quick. However the crunch may be easily fixed with a different set of tubes! Ask around on forums, its a popular amp
>>
>>61185804
I just tried playing with really thick winter gloves. On bass it seems to work for some reason and it DOES make sliding easier. I think silk gloves or really thin cotton gloves would work, has anyone else tried this yet?

I mean, for more chilling, icy slowcore like Down Colourful Hill or I Could Live in Hope, it totally is but maybe not for the more blankety, warm stuff. However, its defining factor is that it takes pedals pretty damn well so you could probably find your sound in there
>>
>>61186887
it's hard to capture the harmonic richness and luxurious touch sensitive dynamics on a cell phone. What other pedals do you think come close?

Yeah sorta like Sun Kil Moon/Songs:Ohia type music. I know he uses AC30's for sure but i can't cough up that much money right now. i fucking hate this meme
if a beginner can afford a nice guitar then he can buy whatever the fuck he wants even if it's some fender custom shop tele or something.
there comes a point where when you're a beginner you know if you're going to stick with guitar or not
if you realize that you love it and want to keep playing for the rest of your life there's no fucking problem with investing in nice pieces of gear. especially because guitars / amps hold resale value extremely well. plus, having nice gear makes you want to play and learn more. there's definitely nothing wrong with that.

He goes "I grew up with Springsteen and Willie Nelson, Crosby Stills and Nash, if you buy a guitar you should be able to jam with your friends in the backyard and not worry about laying it down" or some shit. We have different styles, he'll strum real loud and bang out songs so of course he's going to prefer Taylor or Takamini.

Funny thing though, he sustained a bad head injury like 4 years ago and is borderline retarded.

nothing really wrong with those things
>>
>>61188702
2 strings per saddle are a pain to intonate and most likely can't be intonated right for a set of strings with a wound G.
I think the fact you have two strings resting on one piece makes one ring when it shouldn't, but I'm not completely sure about that.

>ring when it shouldn't
That's subjective, you could argue it adds richness to the tone. It's not like it makes ring as much as if you plucked the string softly.
>2 strings per saddle are a pain to intonate and most likely can't be intonated right for a set of strings with a wound G.
There are balanced saddles though. And again, the intonation being a bit off could even be desirable.

Take this from a guy who posted pic related the other day
>>
>>61189045
Yeah I get that they're not really a problem for bluesy kind of stuff where being completely on point is not desirable, it's just that you have to know that before buying it

more strings doesn't mean djent. Most of these faggots never play anything beyond 8 strings because their tiny babby hands can't reach the 9th string
>>
>>61189570
I didn't vote for them, I voted right wing every time. But vote is mandatory here so every dipshit votes, specially the gibsmedats. And there's people living abroad who come here every 5 years just to vote the commies. They are a big enough amount to tilt the scale in favor of them since this is a small country.

>>
>>61189594
I never said it did, I'm referring to guitars used by djent players, and how we need relicd ones that look like they're from the 60s, even though no company tried to produce them on a large scale until the last decade.

I never even said in my post what I considered to be a djent guitar, you jumped to an assumption that I was strictly focused on the amount of strings.

Not him, but the trick for filling holes in wood to put in a new screw is drill out the hole an insert a wooden dowel that's coated in wood glue.

I've always used the plastic twisting disc strap locks and I've never had a problem.

That's a fix for stripped threads. But if you're stripping threads with a screwdriver then you're kind of a winner.

Alternatively dip a golf tee in glue and break off the excess.

I posted a couple of threads back with this beat up garage sale kramer. Making it look more 80s

I've decided
Dupli color sublime green
Nitro cellulose lacquer
New black pickguard with 2 humbucker slots
Dimarzio D Activator X pair in green
Strat style green knobs from all parts
Wilkinson vintage trem from Gotoh in black
Black string tree
Black Grover tuners
Black output jack and plate
Black cliplock strap, possibly with fake leopard print sewn to it and studs

And if I can get a stencil, black kramer logo at the head stock. Thinking about using it it to try out for WASP when they do a reunion tour, or maybe Ratt.

What do you guys think?

/gg/,

I'm debating putting down on an American Special Strat and a Fender Blues Junior III.

Rationale for the choices aside,

My problem isn't the money, it's that I've only been playing guitar 3 years and the only electric I've ever really played is my squier bullet strat.

I'm might as well be in butt fuck Egypt and there aren't any places to go to test this stuff out. Even if there were, I know very little about what to look for in a good guitar anyways.

If a strat was good enough for half of modern music, its probably more than enough for me to teach myself to be decent at guitar, but I'm wondering what random strangers on the internet would say.

I just keep thinking of shit like you hear about in movies and youtube videos. Artists going into a shop and seeing "the one".

Would you trust the quality of just any old Fender MIA for your first real guitar? Would you trust the quality of any old Fender tube amp? Or would you insist on going store to store until you test out "the one"?

I don't mind practicing, I don't think it's boring, and won't think a set schedule is boring. Just want a linear path to go with fun playing.

>>
>>61193781
unfortunately they're really shitty basses. they don't even come with crowned frets. I'll build myself a body of one some day. Slap a non-bendy neck on and call it a day.
>>
>>61192744
Well you can watch demo's on youtube. Only bother with the ones that are properly mic'd though. If you are unsure about throwing down so much cash, maybe just get a nice sounding amp. I'm personally not a big fan of Blues Jr.'s at the price they sell for new, but they are pretty nice amps. American Special Strats have Texas Special pickups in them, which I honestly think are complete shit. If you like how they sound and don't mind the jumbo frets, go for it. The stuff fender is making nowadays is plenty nice and quality control is good with little variance. You can feel safe that it will be a solid player. I bought a new Mexican strat earlier this year without playing it and it is an amazing guitar. Swapped the pickups and I wouldn't trade it for anything short of a nice lefty Jazzmaster.

All that shit people say about finding their number one guitar is mostly bullshit or just not something thats all too feasible anymore. You can't just walk into a pawn shop and find an amazing guitar at a great price and modern guitars typicallly have so much less variance than older ones (which is still exaggerated by many) so you shouldn't pay any mind to that, especially when you don't even know the specifics of what you like.

Back to your point, I would honestly feel comfortable buying a CV squier without having played it, and same for a MIA fender if the specs were to my liking. Same would go for pretty much any of the major amp makers (probably not bugera though) If you are really on the fence and money is an issue, but you have to buy new, CV tele+Vox AC4 Vox Lil Night Train, or Fender Super Champ is what I would get for practicing. If you need an amp loud enough for playing with a drummer, you might have to go SS or hybrid, but I like Vox's vt series. Orange Micro Terror is a solid option as well, but only comes with an 8" speaker if you get the package, which I'm not into. If you can get a cabinet with a 10 or 12, then its pretty good for the cash.

You won't have tension issues in that setup. I tend to use parallel springs too, but the Y setup doesn't really have any downsides besides not being able to use more springs.

>>61194813
>>61194865
Springs are still in most floating designs.

Yeah most of it belongs to the bass player from Mournful Congregation and Cauldron Black Ram. He does a lot of promo work and back line hire here.

Got a pair of Ampeg 8x10s run by this thing, although he swapped over to a GT1600FX not too long ago if I recall. He was asking me about running a second preamp for a dirt/clean stereo setup live. Think Aaron Rieseberg (YOB) recommended the idea to him.

I'll shamelessly plug his bands

They have some design issues. The bridge breaks strings, the pickup cover is plastic, the mute system's foam rots, the neck pickup is too quiet compared to the bridge, the neck pickup uses a rubber magnet, the neck is too thin, requiring two truss rods, meaning you have to clamp it to adjust it, the frets are small so you will have to replace them relatively soon, but the neck is bound, so that process is difficult. What else? I already said flat frets right? IDK, they sound great though.
>>
>>61195560
Hmm, maybe I'll just buy a reproduction then to fulfill my weeb needs and focus on practical instruments instead.
>>
anyone recommend a decent cheap knockoff les paul to fuck around with? i like how this one looks http://www.rondomusic.com/eg532.html
>>
>>61195560
I find flat frets affect playing chords mostly, so on a bass it shouldn't matter much.
>>
>>61195579
It's a tragedy isn't it? I want one bad too.
>>
>>61195604

>>
>>61195608
It messes up the intonation. If your bass is that old it's probably had them crowned at some point already, so I wouldn't worry about it. If not you should probably get them done.
>>
>>61195604
I wouldn't get that, get one if the agiles they have on sale right now, for the same price. the 2000 series is especially good. The hadeans require repair.
>>
>>61195670
copy that
>>61195628
up to $250. i think agile is probably the best ill be able to do
>>
>>61195641
I don't see how flat frets would fuck up the intonation more than radiused frets, the problem's probably from the fretjob or the set up. Also what do you mean by "had them crowned"?
>>
>>61195560
>the frets are small so you will have to replace them relatively soon
I want a fretless rick tbqh
>>
>>61195690
On second thought, you might want to go up to the 3010s. They're about 290, but they come with perfect frets which will save you the price difference. Plus, they have coil taps. Honestly though les pauls are a bit expensive cuz they're made of mahogany.
http://www.rondomusic.com/product7069.html
>>
>>61195725
ill probably go with that model. thanks for the help
>>
>>61195691
Crowning is a process all frets undergo after being leveled. It just means rounding the tops, leaving a very thin strip of fret untouched, which will be level with all the other frets. Unless they coke from Rickenbacker, where they skip that step. Basically having a round fret means your string will have one point of contact with the fret, exactly at the middle. A flat top fret will have 2 points of contact depending on how hard you press on the fret.
>>
>>61195770
np bro. What color are you thinking of?
>>
>>61195772
After leveling and before crowning your frets look like this. As you can see, each fret is intonated differently. This is how rics come from the factory.
>>
>>61195691
you have to think of how it affects the intonation across the instrument. the only way it's going to be completely intonated is if the entire instrument is crowned or completely flat. say you have just one flat fret and all the others are fine, that particular fret is going to be slightly out and you won't be able to fix it with the bridge because if you get that flat fret intonated then the entire instrument is now out. think about how little the bridge moves when you intonate it, very very small changes can cause the whole string to be out

it gets worse the more flat frets compared to crowned frets you have.

and this is why frets are a pain in the aass
>>
I hate frets. Wish I'd taken up piano instead.
>>
I found something cool. Some of the Douglas gravities come is 24 3/4, with a tune-o-matic bridge and humbuckers in the exact l LP positions. It'd be pretty cool to hear an electronic swap between this and a gibson LP. I've always wondered what difference you could hear between bolt-on and set neck.
http://www.rondomusic.com/gravitywfshtbs.html
>>
>>61195988
Why not both?

If you don't have the space for an actual piano, get an electric one, they don't cost that much. The feel isn't the same as on a real piano, but it will still get you started.
>>
>>61195988
the worst thing about frets is that they aren't all truly in tune or accurate. I'm on a mobile so no pics, but Google true temperament guitar. the frets on those are more precise and accurate.

I've always wondered why some chords never sounded quite right even though I was in tune, we'll, turns out my ears are fine and the frets are shit. you've probably experienced it too.
>>
>>61195988
This >>61196043 some digital pianos can be pretty close too.

I've got a full weighted 88-key, but I use it for MIDI stuff more. Got a 49-key MIDI controller as well. Way more useful than I expected it to be.

>>61196056
It's not a huge issue in context. It'll usually only be noticeably out doing big chords higher up.

True Temperament Frets is definitely a cool idea, but it does effectively lock the guitar into one tuning and string gauge.
>>
>>61196056
like most peoples pianos are tuned well......
>>
really makes me want to go fretless. Maybe I'll make the jazzenbucker a fretless. There's a ton of fretless Ursas.

>It's not a huge issue in context. It'll usually only be noticeably out doing big chords higher up.
>True Temperament Frets is definitely a cool idea, but it does effectively lock the guitar into one tuning and string gauge.

I actually didn't consider that with string gauges and not being able to change tunings that well

fuck. the guitar really is one bitch of an instrument.
>>
>>61196164
If you set your intonation right it really isn't THAT big of an issue. You'll only notice it if you look for it.

I only ever hear it on my short scales if I play high chords.
>>
>>61196134
I wonder if someone could develop perfect strings, such that each would have the same bend off from the string length division. It'd require a different fretboard but at least you could have flat frets.

>That's NOS tube money. Why would you buy a new Chinese tube at that price?
that's exactly what I'm asking lol. I saw the price and I thought "WTF?".
Also, I don't know much about tubes, but aren't EL34s supposed to be cylindrical?
>Damn that's like $1.94 AUD a litre. Highest I've ever paid was $1.72 in the middle of nowhere for 98 Octane.
I know, it's sickening.
>Heh had this when my Grandpa thought about selling his old car. Got asked what the gas mileage was, "If you have to ask you can't afford to drive this car".
lol, typical
>>
>>61196185
If you're set up right your intonation should be equally fucked up no matter where you are on the neck. You need to take a look at your setup. Could also be high action at the bridge causing bend pitch at those frets.
>>
>>61196185
I hear it sometimes when I play with a piano player, very very very slight clashes, most people don't notice it though so I try to ignore it because I can't do anything about it anyway
>>
Not that I would ever be able to afford it, but I heard the Belew-signature Parker has some convenient digital signal manipulation thing built in that emulates other guitar sounds. I think I also read somewhere that it can even compensate for mechanical intonation problems with the instrument using MIDI or something like that.

>>61196270
he's effectively using it as a block. a lot of people do that to fender tremolo if they don't use them, jam something in there to hold it in place qandroid loosen the springs a bit
>>
and Belew also claims (in a Parker marketing video...) that with the stainless-steel frets you get rid of problems with intonation, dead spots, etc., and awkward and expensive maintence like leveling, crowning, etc.
>>
>>61196270
Probably to not have to route out a chunk of wood in the body.

>but aren't EL34s supposed to be cylindrical?
Not always, that's just a big bottle design.

Oh he had a point to be fair. That thing got about 10mpg.

>>61196220
>You need to take a look at your setup
Nah the setup is fine. It's coming from a mix of the short scale and thick strings I'm using. Makes it more obvious.

>>61196233
It isn't really too big of an issue thankfully.

>>61196270
It's pretty common for floating bridges. That or a block of wood.

yea that's the drawback. the money you save by not needing the frets leveled and crowned goes towards all the extra strings you need to buy because the frets eat them.

I'd still take stainless over regular though. easier to change strings than level and crown frets
