and ambient techno from many other artists played a big role in the early idm movement
Dance music always had some releases which were more forward thinking than the rest
Trouble was, some writers didn't realise this, having spent years dismissing dance music as simple and childish (before having some kind of 'epiphany' involving mdma at a rave somewhere)
And so anyone who actually understood dance music stood out as different, especially in America where the divide was more pronounced

idm is influenced by ambient but they sound different. Idm has a more breakbeat style, more rhythm and structure. Thats not to say that Idm artists dont occasionally make ambient music.
