why does everyone praise his music when it's so mediocre
When I was a teenager I was very set in my ways about music. Friends would pass cd's around and I never liked the bands that were popular at the time. I would make my own playlists of random songs I enjoyed, there was no rhyme, reason or genre preference to it. I lived under the assumption that everything sucked and good songs were a rarity.
I remember hearing Life on Mars at 15 and it blew my mind. I learned it was Bowie, who I had no concept of, and downloaded the song later that day. But being stuck in my ways I didn't download anything else by him. A year later I heard Ashes To Ashes. It totally freaked my day out the same way Life on Mars did, and when I learned it was Bowie again I was intrigued.
Over the course of 7 years I listened to all his work from the 70's; assuming that each album that blew my mind was a fluke, and that the next one was surely trash. By the time I would finally convince myself to listen to another one of his albums I would undoubtedly find music that blew my mind just like always. (I'm not sure why I didn't dive into his discography faster considering the success rate I was having.)
Anyway I like to think that I approached his work with a strong sense of skepticism despite enjoying it. He remains the most consistently excellent musician I've heard and his music is some of my favorite. Music is subjective, and if you don't like Bowie's music that's fine, but I think there are a lot of silly criticism levied at him for no reason other than his massive success.

Sounds like you are concerned with what you listen to, like you want to be associated with cool music. The through line with the artists you mention save for st. vincent is a deliberate effort to sound mercurial or lofty. I think when you get older you'll find that music doesn't have to be veiled or intangible to be good, and that these are qualities associated with insecurity on the part of the musician. We live in an age when conviction and effort are seen as bombastic.
