As for Poison, Flesh & Blood has a more bluesy feel to it and less of the glam rock cliches (Brett Michaels is a huge blues fan).

See, that's the point. All those glam rock bands had no sound of their own. They all had the exact same two songs (Power Ballad (TM) and Van Halen-style Squeal Guitar Rocker (TM)) with the same chord progressions and everything. A lot of them were actually talented musicians, but they had to sell out and play this crap to get on the radio.
The mainstream rock scene was just an embarrassment in the late 80s and, while AFD was definitely a very good album, it also had nearly no competition.
