Honestly this is insane. It's not a club record, which he made quite clear, but it's a brilliant reflective record, however Ugly's esoteric style kinda makes it an unorthodox one. It's sincere, but not in the traditional way, Ugly's kinda depicted as like a ghost, not so much a human (except in Drain Counter which is prpbs my fav.) But I think it really fills in the picture of who Travis Miller is.

Wow this went above and beyond my expectations. It does way more for me than MTI does. Almost every track blew my mind but Leonard's Lake, Columns, Persistence and IAPD are god tier. For me it's his best work but it looks like it's going to be pretty polarizing.

Musically it's brilliant in spots, making it worth the wait, but honestly the lyrics are approaching Immortal Technique level edginess and pseudo intellectualism. I always loved MTI because it brought an artsiness to a really hard hitting, thuggee out style of rap, but now he's just dismissed that altogether, and the lyrics are drunk anarcho crusty tier rambling.
Reminds me of Death Grips in a way that all the 'intellectualism' that they bring is just dismissing and criticizing things, and to me that's not especially intellectual, it's just kind of nihilistic and pointless.

he had been making rap for a long time, years before you or I ever heard of him. years before he made noise and black metal, and before he made joke songs like Spook Lo he was writing and recording SERIOUS, PERSONAL lyrics. except they werent that amazing or creative and it blended in to the millions of other East Coast rappers. he started getting noticed when he started releasing stuff from his "gimmicky" LUM project. the dude had been making black metal, harsh noise, you name it, and the LUM project was just that - a PROJECT. not anything deeper than that. the project's inspirations are clear and he captured the sound he was going for so well that it sort of caught fire and gave him a lot of exposure.
he isn't a desperate attention whore or one trick pony, or really even a multi trick pony. he's an artist, and he does what he wants. once people found out who LUM really was he started making his raps more personal and dropping the fictitious persona and i know he enjoyed rapping and making rap music. he just didn't like the bubble that people think rappers need to fit in. so he used the newfound exposure to make something like his "dream" rap album, where he could say what he wanted to say, be himself, and also challenge the listener. he never signed to a label because he didn't want to worry about letting anyone down, but he still wanted and put a lot of effort into making an album people would really love.
and he also knows it doesn't matter because there are so many more elements and interests to his music making hobby. in some ways it was a "fuck you" and in some ways it was him showing everyone else how it's fucking done.
