This album and book are a perfect pairing. Prove me wrong or list other examples of good combos

If anything IJ is some sincere and raw indie rock/garage rock (since DFW himself was a fan of REM and the like, that would most likely be the base)
I feel like This Heat or really any post-punk works for Pynchon
Slowcore in general works for Proust
>>61067677
I think Pynchon is more like Yo La Tengo
>>61067690
I can see that, but I just see the edge and overall mocking nature of Pynchon (as well as this odd sense of doom that hangs about all of his work) as fitting more with the acerbic nature of post-punk. Maybe that's just me
>>61067600
A Silver Mt. Zion would work prfectly for Schopenhauer
>>61067600
Feel like this would be a better match for IJ really. Too much over the top stuff happens in IJ to pair it with such a relaxed album.
>>61067914
what are you talking about, nothing remarkable happened in that book.
>>61068002
The wheelchair assassins, the crazy tennis academy shit, the fact that the plot centers around a fucking movie that kills whoever watches it? There's loads of ridiculousness, anon.
>>61068084
it was all very everyday within the context of the novel
>>61068120
which context are you not a retard in?
Loveless
anything for brave new world?
>>61067600
American Football is the musical equivalent to IJ.
Shit thread
Pic related definitely goes with Trout Mask Replica though, beyond the title. Both are a bizarre clusterfuck of americana.
Pic related an ITAOTS.

that cover makes me think of the conjoined twins freezing to death inside some strangers stomach in Oh Comely
>>61067690
nah Caroliner
>>61070348
Are you kidding? To me Blankets is For Emma, Forever Ago (admittedly more in the wintery feel than the concept).
>>61068140
lmaooo

some pairings off top
The Canterbury Tales / ambient tunes from Elder Scrolls games
The Iliad / Animals As Leaders
The Golden Ass / Earthbound soundtrack
Nick Land / Autechre
I'm cheesy as fuck, I know
what would be even better: some hilarious ironic pairings
The Canterbury Tales / DG
The Iliad / kpop
etc.

You can't read and listen properly at the same time.
This is the problem with people these days, they can't do nothing, they can't do one thing, they need to feel busy.
>>61071302
Why are you surprised at what I said? I thought it had pretty similar themes, with the longing for romance, the remembering of his fucked up childhood, and all the religious symbolism and alienated outlook of the world. Mangum could have very well led a similar life to Craig Thompson. I haven't heard For Emma, Forever Ago though so I'll listen to that.
one of the comfiest reads of my life
Ulysses and Trout Mask Replica is the one definite combo
maybe Gravity's Rainbow and Animals by Pink Floyd too, the other ones don't feel so complete
Not just because of content but they are both super dark and at times whimsical
anything china mieville / bone machine
J. G. Ballard's Crash and Burial's Shelter
Divers
>>61070348
>Not the Diary of Anne Frank
Have you all just read Gravity's Rainbow because it was assigned during your undergrad or what
>>61073717
Nah, I read Pynchon because I kept hearing about him and got curious.
I liked V. a lot, but Gravity's Rainbow was such a confused mess, I think I understood less than half of it. I don't mind digressions and long descriptions but most of the time he won't even say what or who he's talking about. Glad I didn't have to study it, I would have flunked that course badly.
>>61073717
No it's because I shitpost on /lit/ and have nothing better to do
I enjoyed it but I prefer V.
Don't you guys think it's strange that these albums are all believed to be similar to an incredibly limited subset of books? A subset of books which are coincidentally popular in high school and on 4chan?
N.B. If you haven't read many books, don't make these comparisons! You're not only speaking from a limited frame of reference, but you're making your ignorance obvious to everybody else.
Imagine if somebody was comparing plants to songs, but they just so happened to think every plant in the universe was similar to Rolling Stone magazine's Top 10 songs of all time. "I think the Guarana climbing plant is just like Stairway to Heaven." "The Fremont cottonwood tree really reminds me of Smells Like Teen Spirit."
It's incredibly boring to read, and there's obviously no justification to your comparison.
That's what I see in this thread, anyways. Carry on.

I too think V is his masterpiece, his later works feel too second guessed.
I have many friends in the film department and they were assigned GR so I wondered how ubiquitous it has been made it in academia.
>>61073972
I mean, you're not wrong at all, I think it's just that way so that every one can recognize and discuss those comparisons. If everyone did comparisons to incredibly obscure and esoteric books, it might deprive of some of the discussion and "fun" of the whole thread
Still, you do have a point. I wish I was less entry-level when it comes to literature
>>61073972
Richard Brautigan isn't really popular anywhere
>>61068120
No it... wasn't?
I need comparisons for the following authors:
>Marquez
>Borges
>Balzac
>De Sade
>Roth
>Henry James
>Miller
Does anyone have any recs?
>>61074002
V. blew me away. I read a few more of his books (and tried to read Gravity's Rainbow) and it seems like he's making the same general point in different contexts.
>>61074051
Joanna Newsom is in a similar style with the magical realism authors. Roth is a tough one. He's a genius, but it's very un-musical.
phillip k dick= j g thirlwell
burroughs= death grips
>>61070327
wow so true
James Joyce and The Residents
>>61074051
The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Tender Prey
Flannery O'Connor - A Good Man Is Hard To Find
>>61074501
Both are favorites. But how?
finnegans wake
>>61074501
Both are masterpieces about time and its influence on human condition
Although maybe something like baroque music would fit Mann better
>>61074794
shit, this>>61074794
was meant for you
