It doesn't have to be. In fact, I think most of the time their highest-rated album isn't given AOTY. It's been that way for the last two years. Vampire Weekend beat Yeezus' 9.5 in 13, and Run the Jewels beat Swans and Sun Kil Moon last year (both were agreeable, IMO).
Usually they judge by "relevance," which is how you get the last two examples. It has to apply to the zeitgeist. It's there where I think Kendrick has a chance at sweeping. Politically and musically, his album is totally representative of 2015, for better or worse. The rest aren't. Jaime probably has the best chance out of the three, as they can say something about electronic music, but the other two are
a. indie folk, and
b. 70s rock revival

In this episode driven by Huey's own dream nonetheless - Dr Martin get's so angry at all the horrible corrupted representations of black culture that he goes on a impassioned speech that gets played around new stations all across America and gets black people to act, seen the next day protesting outside a BET, working harder in school, dropping their gang violence to seek peace and fight against the actual systems that are destroying their community from within and without. I'm almost 100% certain Kendrick has seen this episode he echoes the sentiment almost exactly in "The Blacker The Berry."
