Company.
Runner up is probably Urinetown.
>tfw Being Alive
As far as original music is concerned, either Repo! The Genetic Opera or Electric Dragon 80.000v.
If we're taljing licensed, probably The Blues Brothers or Burst City.
The Halber Mensch movie was also cool
I love Book of Mormon, but I can never not love the Rocky Horror Show
we can all agree that Stephen Sondheim is a QT
For me it's Into the Woods.

I too fear its best years are behind it. Nice to see NBC staging live performances and getting huge ratings, though. Just like they would in the good old days, like the premiere of Cinderella.

The clip I listened to was pleb. Typical meandering, over-emotive, rhythmically monotonous melodies that fashionable samey instrumentation which was all the rage. Janácek gets away with that shit because the accompaniment is so expressive and dynamic. When Broadway composers do it it's just tedious.

My list of top musicals isn't handy but Sweeney Todd and West Side Story are my favorites. Honorable mention/underdog shout out to Bye Bye Birdie.
>>61064126
Honestly? The Lion King. The music itself wasn't that great, but I was amazed at everyone's ability to sing and move the way they did. People were climbing walls like ninjas. People were falling off of fake cliffs.
Also the stage effects were weirdly good, even the small stuff. like that scene with the water puddle drying up.
>>61070969
