people sometimes refer to his glam days as really pretentious, but in reality the guy was just mixing different stuff that he liked (theatre and music), and saw that dressing up as characters would help him at performing, because he was shy. also, in those days he wanted to be famous, and did as much as he could about it (there's a documentary that talks about this, but with only watching pictures of him from those days you can see him trying as much stuff as he could to earn attention from the public), and obviously dressing up as a androgynous bisexual alien in the 70's was a huge thing.
and well, after dressing up as a character every night, getting famous and starting to take drugs, he got a bit "broken", and a bit of real pretentiousness started to appear, but in the beginning he was just fucking around to be famous.
