I thought King Animal was good too, but I don't think any of SG's or AIC's comebacks are better than any of STP's best albums.
King Animal does have a few great songs on it, though. Blood on the Valley Floor and Bones of Birds could have easily been on Down on the Upside.
I definitely don't agree about BGWTB or TDPDH being better than Layne era albums, but BGWTB to me definitely holds its own against some of Layne era AIC.

Yeah Dirt is hard to beat but i dont know. It might be because i didnt grow up with any of the layne albums. i sort of listened to all of them over the course of like 3 months.
STP are good. Core and Purple are definitely better than any Pearl Jam albums except maybe Vitalogy but they didnt really blow me away like some of soundgarden or AIC's albums.

King Animal is honestly trash. I liked it a lot when it first came out but I haven't listened to it since. It's honestly just a bad album. It doesn't even have one strong song (first track maybe).
BGWTB is excellent, it's certainly not better than Dirt though. It's probably better than Facelift and maybe as good as Tripod or a bit worse.
TDPDH is not as good, in fact I'd probably say it's the worst album J.C has released. It's not a bad album and I'd say it's miles better than King Animal, but I wouldn't say it's excellent, too much filler. The thing with AiC/J.C is usually most/all of the songs are excellent, where as while they aren't really mediocre on TDPDH, quite a few aren't exactly excellent either. Pretty Done, Voices, Breath On a Window, Scalpel and Choke aren't exactly great. But the good songs are really fucking good. Hollow, Stone, Lab Monkey, Phantom Limb and Hung on a Hook are god tier.

I've probably listened to the album more than you have.
Title track and Low Ceiling are excellent but not god tier.
Pretty Done is just a good song, nothing more, nothing less. Voices just reminds me of 'Your Decision' but not as good. Breath On a Window is also good but it's just kind of another 'Take Her Out' or 'Lesson Learned'. Scalpel is another nice song but not excellent (by AiC/JC standard). Choke is kind of lacklustre after hearing the end part of Hung on a Hook. If anything Hung on a Hook should have ended the album because the ending of that song is one of the best moments on the album.
I have to say, I'm kind of worried for the next AiC album. Because TDPDH was kind of just following a formula from BGWTB. Hopefully the next album will be kinda different. But Jerry is a great artist so I'm sure he will do something excellent as is his standard.

I've heard them all a million times. I'll be the first to say that KA isn't their best work and would probably be last place on my Soundgarden rankings. That said, Soundgarden's standard is extremely high. When the worst criticism of King Animal is that it doesn't live up to Soundgarden's best work, well that's just to be expected. Most albums don't.
Anyone's opinion is just as valid as everybody else's. I just don't understand why people are so harsh on King Animal as to call it garbage, when at worst it's really not that bad.
