It's kinda ass for programming, but for making, trimming and looping samples it's wonderful. It can be difficult to put together whole songs on it because of limited polyphony. I'd say get a 404 if you can, but I'm not sure if the effects are as good

I have a 404 and the effects are pretty solid. Its cool to run other instruments through it and just run it through the effects.
Other than that its only advantage to the 303 is space.

I'd say they're worse for beginners, the programming is better, but they really lack sound altering abilities, the FX board is really useful in the 303.
