So, what is the consensus, /mu/? When you're talking about a band, do you refer to the band as one collective entity or a group of people? Like, would you say
>Neutral Milk Hotel IS a good/shitty band
or
>Neutral Milk Hotel ARE a good/shitty band
It depends which dialect you speak, as far as I know.

It's completely interchangeable really
The only exceptions would be something like "the members of *band* are" or "*band* is one of the only-"
wikipedia uses 'is' for american groups and 'are' for english groups

It depends on how many people are in the band. If its just a one person band like Tame Impala or Nine Inch Nails then you use is, but if there's more than one band member you use are.
I say is
Wouldn't a band be a collective noun

That's stupid

The Beatles ARE good
Pink Floyd IS good
singular/plural m80
If they follow a "The Xs" format, you would say are. Otherwise, is. For example: The Monkeez ARE great, but Gorillaz IS great.

Obviously when the name is grammatically plural you use the plural.
The question is what you do when the name is grammatically singular.
