JF clearly had talent from a young age BUT he was only 19 when he joined the band while the other guys were in their late 20s so he was a lot more immature than them and had a hard time dealing with the pressure of touring which is why he fell into drug addiction and dropped out during 1992.
By the time he rejoined in 98, he was almost 30 and had grown up a lot (almost dying of drugs probably helped as well).

It had to do with the production. Michael Beinhorn forced John to use a ton of heavy metal riffs which didn't fit with their sound at all. They weren't happy with it and mostly forgot about those songs once the album tour was over.
