Hey /mu/! I just started playing guitar a few months ago and have gotten through basic music theory. I'm currently learning some songs and am having trouble with bar chords--they hurt my fingers so damn much. I'm wondering what I can do to help that? Also, general guitar advice thread/what steps to take to improve.

Bar chords just hurt in general, If I stop playing guitar for a few days it hurts when I play bar chords again, you literally just have to play everyday, the muscles and joints in your hands and fingers will eventually adapt.

wtf? they should have stopped hurting within your first month
my advice would be to not use guitar tabs or at least not frequently. learn to play by ear. try simple songs at first and eventually you will be able to play anything

Barre 1st fret, strum.
Move finger to second fret without lifting, strum.
Do this up to the 12th fret to a metronome every day. Your fingers will strengthen over time.

if you are having trouble with barre chords after a week or two of practicing, your nut is probably too high
in the meantime, do a power chord with the 3rd
for ex

>use your thumb on e string
>use your ring finger on the d string
>use middle finger on G string

>use your thumb on e string
>use your ring finger on the d string

just move the root note to where you want it

Everytime I learn something by ear I end up playing the chords in the wrong positions, theyre the right chords but in the wrong spot when I look it up, hiw can I fix this?

My friend completely fucked his pinky, as in it can't even move anymore and he still manages to play, I also know people with arthritis who can play, Kevin Shields from my bloody valentine has tendonitis in his left hand and he still manages. Anything is possible.
