Genuine question, /mu/
How can I develop a taste that is actually original and interesting?
Right now, my taste just says "I am interested in music".
>>
>>61002437
listen to more music

you fucking fagtron

(that said if that really is your taste and not just b8 then you should actually STOP listening to music - it clearly isn't for you)
>>
>>61002437
Listen to as much diverse stuff as you can, and naturally your taste will become more diverse. Listen to stuff that sounds interesting or appealing even if it isn't necessarily highly rated or popular. Some of my favourite albums are probably not highly regarded my the majority.

Also, don't listen to anyone on /mu/, including me
>>
>Right now, my taste just says "I am interested in music".
it really doesn't
>>
take the time and effort to explore and listen to music you actually like rather than listening to a bunch of critically acclaimed albums thrown at you just so you can post about how original and interesting your taste is on this shithole
>>
>>61002474
Where would you recommend I find out about most music?
I ask this because /mu/ isn't my homeboard and I find out about most stuff through Scaruffi and Fantano (sorry)
>>
>>61002490
this
explore scenes and sounds that interest you and aren't necessarily critically acclaimed
don't think about how an album will look on your chart,
think about how it makes you feel
that can mean pop, dubstep, post punk, hardcore, anything
>>
>>61002489
What does it say then?

>>
>>61002437
listen to more music, see what genres you like the most and thoroughly explore those genres

also stop caring if it's original or not
>>
>>61002508
soundcloud is cool for electronic music, I use bandcamp a lot, /mu/ sharethreads, local live music scenes,
some forums occasionally though I only recently started frequenting IDMForums

Investigate a particular strand of influence or sound from something you do like and keep listening to similar stuff until what you are listening to is completely divergent. Your taste will as a result develop with your discovery as you find out what you do and don't like.

Music discovery is a personal quest and this will be most fulfilling if yoy take the time to discover things on your own. That said essentials charts exist for a fucking reason, they are good guidlines so you can see popular examples of specific sounds. Start there and delve deeper based upon what you find most interesting.
The sticky exists for a reason.
>>
>>61002508
rym
discogs
lastfm
spotify
the list could go on...
>>
>>61002508
Yeah RYM is a good choice. I'd work through genres individually, because at the moment it looks like you're in a position where you've listened to a couple of select releases of each. For instance, if you like A Love Supreme, check out as much Spiritual Jazz stuff as you can, because you'll like encounter stuff you like even more if you explore. Check out other Coltrane stuff, check out Alice Coltrane and Pharaoh Sanders and Bennie Maupin and Lonnie Liston Smith etc etc, and do the same for King Crimson and VU and The Beatles and the respective albums in those genres. You'll strike upon loads of stuff you really enjoy as a result.
>>
Maybe you should just listen to whatever you like instead of worrying about looking "interesting" in front of others.
>>
>>61002672
this, listen music because you like listening to music, not to impress people on an anonymous anime porn board
>>
>>61002437
Really the simple answer is to just listen to lots of music. Rate your music is good for finding well liked albums in a particular genre. /mu/ is actually not bad for finding new music as well, just ignore all of the smug assholes who try and make you feel guilty for liking certain albums/artists
>>
>>61002437

why should it be different? you will like some bands other people like and some other people don't, you are not listening to music for other people at least you shouldn't be

Go here http://rateyourmusic.com/customchart listen to those, type in genres you like and listen to the top 100, search by decade too

here's what these faggots deem acceptable

last.fm and tastekid will let you find similar artists to what you already like
>>
>>61002437
I listen to and like a lot of less known stuff but my all time favourites are still mostly well known albums, Am I forever pleb?
>>
>>61002899
op here, this is essentially my issue
>>
>>61003021
Almost all of my favourite albums are extremely well know; what's the problem?
>>
>>61003021
Who fucking cares?

your very first question makes no sense.
You want to somehow develop something that you already have. Your taste exists already, and it doesn't change by listening to new shit, it just so happens that that new shit you also like.

Honestly music taste is such a buzzterm. That shit doesn't even exist. You listen to music and you either like it or dislike it, simple as that. Everyone in here is acting like its some sort of skill that you can train and master until you ascend to the level of true musicfag.
>>
>>61003075
But this isn't true. You can expand it and 'train it'. There are loads of styles and genres that use to be a huge turn off for me that I slowly warmed to listening to.
>>
>>61003075
this
why would you care about what other people think of what you like?
Stop calling yourself a "pleb", that's only meant as a joke term and not something to take seriously
just listen to music you like fucks sake
>>
>>61002515
that you want to shape your taste by the way others perceive you and not by your own taste.
>>
>>61003091
I see where you're coming from but I disagree.

You're not 'expanding' anything. You're just listening to things you haven't listened to before. And just like a book or movie or food, you may not like it at first. But after repeated listenings you will pick up on subtleties, lyrics etc that make the music more appealing to you. There is nothing to do with this abstract idea of some overriding taste that predetermines what music you will and won't like.

gb2reddit, seriously. the rest of the thread before all you keks was actually trying to help OP. i'm sorry it's too hard to navigate away from Fantano and Pitchfork for you, but some people actually want to learn about music
>>
>>61002672
yeah, you should not feel that knowing music is a must because of knowing more, thats stupid, just listen wjat you like and if it catch your interest, search for similar artists, but not with the final objective of knowing music because of getting lot and lot of info, just liking it
>>
>>61003129
fucks sake wrong thread
>>
>>61003133
>being this fucking insecure
lmao
>>
>>61003122
this would make sense if there weren't such things as genre classifications and stylistic variation. yes, in the realm of popular music, it is probably image-based posturing more than anything that determines what one likes if one isn't relying on their ears. however, there are genres that take more getting used to, or threads through history that aren't as widely publicized but go just as deep as the classic mythical rock timeline that connects all of the music of the 20th century to some major tidal wave. in other words, you're sort of right, and i understand what you mean, but you're taking taste too literally. tastes can change, too. it's not always an additive process. i genuinely don't like the sound of indie rock music anymore after listening to it exclusively though high school. i credit getting into other genres more heavily with that.
>>
>>61002437
Why not just listen to music you enjoy, and not care for what other people might think is 'orignial' or 'interesting', hmm?
>>
>>61002437
