I don't really get this idea that there's some finite amount of creative energy and you can only spend it on one thing or another
all popular music artists are to some degree in control of their image
see album covers, music videos, interviews etc
it's part of the music experience, no matter what appeals to "authenticity" they might make, there's more to music than the sounds you record
top 40 pop in general and kpop specifically certainly have a much more involved image to maintain, but the idea that it somehow detracts from the quality of music is baffling to me
how is it any different from elaborate stage shows and costumes from glam rockers or the corpse paint and gloom of black metal?
I get if you don't like dance pop, pop rap, electropop etc
that's fine, it's certainly not for everyone
but writing it off because of the fans? because of the image? it's silly and pretty backwards
I'm not going to pretend I don't love the stage shows, the dancing, the outfits
but if the appeal was in the idols alone why would my collage be filled with kpop music

holy shit don't say i said that, because i absolutely hate people that do that (which is unfortunately a lot of people here) it's not even about the music at that point as much it is the image
it's just that it all sounds the same, and it has no real impact, doesn't stand the test of time, and this goes to all top 40s music regardless of genre (although there is the occasional exception)
give me a kpop album you consider good, and i meana actually good, that has stood the test of time, and i'll listen to it

there are some classics from the 80s and 90s but the kpop thing didn't really hit it big until well into the 2000s
