The by far most difficult thing was getting album art to work. MPD doesn't handle album art at all, and doesn't output path to the music file either, so I had to use a script to figure out the path for the album folder from outputs from the mpc cli utility.
If the path doesn't correspond perfectly to the metadata - no artwork. Luckily I just do Artist/Album/*.mp3, and no genre or year sorting folders.

cmus is a bit better in that regard from what I understand, you can give it scripts to run everytime something changes in playback (for scrobbling etc). Never gave mpd a fair try, tried it when I didn't have any media player on it and couldn't get ALSA to work with it.

MusicBee users in a nutshell.
I use shell scripts and mplayer/mpv to play music my music from computer. Still looking for a way to play my music on iphone easily from my database on my unix server.
For playlists I use directories full of links or text files with directory lists.
