guys let's play a game: make a concept album using already existing meal songs
i'll start:

mine is pretty much about nuclear war breaking out due to tensions with the middle east, then following one guy, who, losing is grip, begins to jerk off to the sky as he feels lonely and disgusted by the violence left in the world. As the disease gets worse, he vomits his guts out. In his last breath, still horny, he digs up a child corpse and jerks off with it before dying

Short EP

tracklist:

Sarpanitum-By Virtuous Reclamation
Sodom-Nuclear Winter
Acid Bath-The Blue
Demilich-Inherited Bowel Levitation - Reduced Without Any Effort
Cannibal Corpse-Necropedophile

>>
>>60881013
I dunno; my problem with DT has always been their inability to craft good melodies on the non-prog parts. The beginning of the song is just generic chord progressions with a sappy bad ballad feel. It's not so much that I think they are bad, but they fall short of plenty of other prog bands.

I suppose that song does have some potential. The verse riff isn't too bad, there's some pretty solid bass counterpoint, but I dislike how the chorus throws away anything interesting musical stuff. Take ved buens ende, deicide and type o negative, mash them together with a bit of prog, thrash and arabic ambient interludes for good measure and you've got this album, on paper it sounds like it shouldn't have worked, but goddamn, this is one of the few albums I'd give a 10/10 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bA2Vve-paH0
there is no flaw, the arabic interludes seem to tell a side-story to the main album, but feels very related, also one of the few albums that made me genuinely creeped out

I can't bear myself to listen to everything you listed, but let's just stick with Closed Eyed Visuals.

90% of the song is just one riff/melody with some slight rhythmic variations and mediocre drumming over it. Yes obviously guitars and bass contribute rhythmically to music and that's true of any genre. Calling this complex is completely laughable though. Like I said earlier, any decent math rock band shits all over this both rhythmically and melodically. It's honestly not much more than just off beat chugs.

I can't about 4 or 5 different riffs in it, so that's inaccurate

You are completely failing to account for the motific variations: Nothing is an album of subtly. On top of that, you're judging the music with even considering the melodic pattern the riffs are using (spooking angular diminshed patterns), as well as the concept and lyrics.

No one is saying that Meshuggah is the be-all end-all of complexity, and I'd agree that there are quite a few math rock bands out there who have more complexity to their sound, but disregarding Meshuggah as completely pretentious is just objectively wrong, and shows you haven't really studied their music much.

>>60883754
I'm only talking about the complexity of the music. Lyrics and concept be damned.

I am completely disregarding the melody because it's not worth mentioning at all. It's just a short little phrase and it makes up the vast majority of the song. It's not subtle, it's shallow. Yes, there are some variations on the main riff, but it's just slightly different variations. Barely anything worth mentioning.

For example, this song has much more complex syncopation in the bassline and undergoes more complicated rhythmic patterns than that entire Meshuggah song despite being very melodic.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNu25CTzKJQ

Honestly, I don't think Meshuggah sells themselves as complex, so I can't really call them pretentious. But the fans that constantly oversell their mediocre skills simply because the music is a little unconventional are pretentious.
>>
>>60883772
A couple of things:

I use Columns UI and you should too because it allows for far more customization than the default UI.

http://yuo.be/columns.php

For instance: I turn the main toolbar off. There's nothing in that toolbar that can't be mapped to a key. Seeking, pausing, stopping, fucking with the volume, etc.

I don't really use playlists (just the one I listen an album through), but I'm assuming you can also set a key to switch through them once you have them set up.

If I want an album list, I also map a key which pops up a window with it (this would be under "Library" in the main toolbar) which allows me to just have the set up I have now, which is really simple.

I also use a custom font because Segoe UI is garbage. You can do this with Columns UI and good taste in fonts. There's a thread over at /gd/ if you want some good fonts:

>>>/gd/242835

I also do something which is make my Foobar2000 window borderless. I do that through this:

https://github.com/Codeusa/Borderless-Gaming

Which can be used with any application and not just games. The downside is you can't move the window (if it's not fullscreen) once it's borderless. I fix that with this:

https://stefansundin.github.io/altdrag/

Also this >>60883930. You can change the UI colors with Columns UI too.

>Lyrics and concept be damned.
That's your problem. If you can't appreciate that aspect, you don't really have much to say about Meshuggah: A huge aspect of their aesthetic is derived by the lyrics/concept along with the music

>I am completely disregarding the melody
Also you're problem.

> It's just a short little phrase and it makes up the vast majority of the song
Yes, that's true. The melodic aesthetic of Meshuggah is quite simple, but again, when juxtaposed with the distinct vocal production and the concept/lyrics, I'd say they are effective at facilitating a distinct aesthetic (super spooky/weird/creepy feeling). This juxtaposed with the "Phasing in and out of tempo" rhythmic nature of the chugs also helps.

>Yes, there are some variations on the main riff, but it's just slightly different variations.
I literally just listened to it, and there is more than just 1 riff. Granted, there isn't a ton more, about 4 or 5, but still.

That's actually a good song! I appreciate the incidental recommendation.

>Honestly, I don't think Meshuggah sells themselves as complex
Correct, I suppose.

>But the fans that constantly oversell their mediocre skills simply because the music is a little unconventional are pretentious.
