I know that for me this and Lifestyles Ov da Poor and Dangerous are the top, even though there is 36 Chambers and a multitude of other stuff. The GZA is an amazing lyricist, my favourite member of the Wu-Tang, and this is my favourite solo Wu-Tang album. It is testosterone-violent as fuck but at the same time it's comfy and there are so many different nice jazz samples all over it to pick out and check. Back then rappers could be talking about gangsta ignorant violence and shit but they did it with some amazingly well-written verses and great flows.

I actually find Tical kinda boring. You can tell that they lost all the beats RZA had for it halfway into making the album. All of it sounds so half-baked
>>

I haven't heard any Deck solo projects, but GZA and ODB btfo of Meth and arguably Rae as well. And like I said I just don't like Ghost's voice on a personal level. I can acknowledge his skill though.

>>60881654

I like OB4CL a lot, is the sequel album as good?
>>
>>60881685
>GZA and ODB btfo of Meth and arguably Rae as well
I said RZA, not GZA. RZA's rapping is mediocre as fuck. ODB's flow is interesting but that's about as far as it goes. Lyrically he's nothing special.

Later projects from Meth's catalog contain numerous quotables. Rae's shit always just sounds like some cool ass mafioso scheming shit. Both have very nice flows and their catalogs are way more interesting than RZA's.
>>
>>60881797
Rza's flow on 4th Chamber and Marvel is just as good as any in wu

>>
>>60873833
Suicide its a suicide
>>
>>60883454
not him but I always found tribe to be nice beats paired with average hip hop. The production on their stuff was dope, but most of the time their songs could get pretty weird or aimless, like the one where they decide to describe thoroughly what which one of them asked for in a bar as if it's the most important thing ever. Either way, as a devote rapfag, of course I like them, and of course Low End was some iconic shit. But if you are there listing 90's albums so categorically at least have the decency to include: >>60874253
>>
>>60883778
I love the shit out of Big L. Kids a god on the mic. It's hard to find someone who can fuck with him.

But when it comes to ICONIC albums, albums that raised the bar in every way imaginable, that's a very select few, and there are tons of my favorite albums that don't make the cut
>>
>>60884053

You know "iconic" is not synonymous with "objectively good", right?
>>
>>60884110
yeah, I wouldn't argue that any of these albums are 'objectively good'. Again, albums like the chronic and amerikkka's most aren't my personal favorites. But what they did for the music is indisputable.

I find Doggystyle to be more enjoyable than the Chronic. Arguably better lyrics, more fun beats. But would I ever say Doggystyle is more influential than the Chronic? Of course not.

In my opinion, the thing that makes an album 'the greatest' is it's influence, because that's what can actually be seen in the music following it.

If you genuinely believe that an album like Liquid Swords is the greatest hip hop album of the 90s, you are a backpacker, and I'm sorry. And that's probably one of my favorite albums ever made.

But 'greatest hip hop album of the 90s'?

There's a lot of others that deserve to be named first for what they did for the music
>>
>>60884395

>If you genuinely believe that an album like Liquid Swords is the greatest hip hop album of the 90s, you are a backpacker, and I'm sorry.

The fuck? Liquid Swords is hardly backpacker shit. It's mostly gangsta/mafioso rap with a lot of bragging.

Influence is definitely objective, but why should we judge an album on its influence rather than its actual musical/lyrical quality? That doesn't make sense. There's a ton of terrible shit that has been hugely influential.
>>
>>60884589
Yeah, I just use backpacker as a synonym for hipster. Some of my friends who are "hip hop heads" don't even know that album, and if they do know it they don't know the track list.

I'm using influence as the main indicator because lyrics and beats can be disputed. What's the real difference between Liquid Swords and OB4CL? Two top tier MCs. Some of the best RZA beats ever made. Songs with some of the coldest fucking wu lyrics ever (4th chamber & verbal intercourse). But which Wu album is the actual actual legendary one?

Enter the 36 chambers. And it's not hard to find rappers these days who STILL pay homage to that one album. My favorite is OB4CL for its musical content, but I'd be an idiot to say it's greater than enter the 36 chambers. And a lot of that comes from its musical content, what it did first and what it did best.

I see what you're saying, but I'm confident great albums are the ones that are remembered. If you do something truly innovative, you will be remembered as one of the greats
>>
>>60872881
1. Wu tang forever 2.All eyes on Me 3. Liquid Swords 4. Moment of Truth 5. Ridin Dirty
>>
>>60872421
>GZA
>comfy
lol whut, do you only speak in internet buzzwords?
>>
>>60884913

I haven't memorized the tracklist of any of my favorite albums honestly. A lot pf times I feel like every time I listen to my favorites it's for the first time. But anyways, backpacker and hipster do generally go hand in hand BUT not always. Hipsters are people who just want to like whatever is obscure or underrated, whereas backpackers are people who can only find value in "conscious" shit or shit with "experimental" or abstract lyrics.

I prefer Liquid Swords over 36 Chambers or OB4CL because it's colder and darker and just sets this great atmosphere that persists from the opening sample to the end sample. Is it perfect? Know, and if you prefer high-energy, more playful rapping then I can see why you'd prefer 36 chambers. OB4CL has a more Scarface-ish theme which is cool, but Liquid Swords just brings you to this whole other world and that's why it's my favorite. My second-favorite hip-hop album of the 90s would probably be Illmatic (yes I know it's an overly common choice, but come on, it IS that good).

haha yes dude I absolutely agree. And of COURSE Illmatic is up there, it's the quintessential 90s album. I'd call it number one rap album of the 90s for that alone, that's why I included it in my original post.

I actually prefer OB4CL to 36 chambers, in my previous post I was just trying to express why greatness extends past being a 10/10 album or whatever someone's metric is.

There are albums that are monuments not only in hip hop but in music in general. Your "It takes a nation of millions", your "the chronic", your "illmatic". It's a combination of so many things that can't really be expressed. You just know

No I said that more me personally
