anyone else feel like music is getting very dreary and people aren't having as much fun with this artform as the past? felt like artists used to just hangout in the studio all day and fuck around like a group like odd future however you feel about their music you can't deny they had fun just doesn't seem like a group like that can exist in this time were in. also pop songs have been sadder but I think thats always been the case and maybe i'm just noticing it more to fit this narrative. thoughts? is this just a phase for the music industry?

we live in depressing times, obama was a failure, brought no hope and change, people are getting more cynical, muslims keep blowing themselves up, the government is controlled by corporations, SJW's getting offended at everything, endless war.

Music has been getting mores depressing over time, there have been studies.

http://www.avclub.com/article/new-study-says-music-is-way-more-depressing-now-84296

Of course pops answer to this is give us bland shit like lorde or adele.

same shallow pop music just with a different mask.

People dont enjoy music they only participate in it, why is edm so popular now, because people want to go to festivals and do drugs and hear the same song over and over again.

or at the movies its the same movie over and over again, remakes, based on a comic book part 8.

People are scared and want to be fed shit.

we are caught in a stasis of nostalgia and mediocrity.

what has rap done, odd future, just horrocore on skateboards, kendrick lamar, just old school west coast hip hop again, nothing new is happening.

Personally i would like to see rock come back since its pretty much become the kid on the back of the milk carton of musical genres
>>
>>60872288
not necessarily rock but definately something for the type of person who is attracted to rock

theres a certain type of person that is being completely neglected by music right now and so weve delved into this weird revival era just because their is literally nothing else for people like us

I think it's actually the opposite of what you say.

Music has stagnated because we westerners actually have it alright with technology coming as far as it's come.

There just isn't as much to rebel against and the current climate doesnt inspire innovation or actual sub cultures being developed.

Do you have any sense of perspective? In the 30's unemployment was around 30%. In the 40's we fought a fucking war against a genocidal regime which killed orders of magnitude more than ISIS every will be able to. From the 50's to the 80's human civilization literally faced an existential threat. You say inequality is growing, PC culture is stifling discourse, and radical Islam has the world stuck in a mire? I say starvation is diminishing [1], education opportunity is increasing [2], democracy is growing at the margins of despotisms everywhere [3]. As far as fear goes, I can't imagine a time in history in which people weren't terrified of some imagined threat; your odds of dying from terror in North America and Europe are literally less than one in a million. But I digress.

Music has always been participatory, operating on a spectrum between the kids who feel it in their bones and the kids who just want to fit in. I'll give you that mainstream will always lag behind the underground, and also that it has stagnated as of late, having been co-opted by increasingly savvy marketing regimes. But this is simply due to the way people are and always have been, not to sad people wanting to listen to garbage.

I don't think its that music is only getting more emotional so much as the emotional and fun parts are getting more separate, like every song has to be designated a feel one or a fun one at the beginning of the writing process. It seems like musics getting more dreary from looking at /mu/ because we focus on that type of music naturally because we all have sadfuck lives
>>
>>60874678
You so fucking right. People always shit on the current generation and have some crazy idealized image of the past

I do agree that there really that many artits making fun music. I was listening to some fun 90s Hip-Hop like Kid n' Play/Fresh Prince and if I asked you to give me the equivalent of that today you couldn't. The closest in any genre is Tyler and Mac. Other than that, serious music that has comedic/laid-back qualities really are non-existent.
