What does /mu/ think about this album?
slightly overrated
good tunes, but feels a bit samey and gimmicky halfway through (DUDE SULTRY FEMALE VOCALS/RECYCLED BASSLINES)
most of it has aged like bad cheese, except for a couple tunes

The entire genre has aged hilariously bad, and Mezzanine just happens to be one of the albums that has aged more gracefully

Black Milk and Inertia-Creeps are some real great tracks, but as a whole it's not a great album. I like they tried to put more of a rock influence compared the previous works.
Yeah I'd say it's probably their 3rd or 4th best album, but Heligoland is better in almost everyway.

Honestly, I think this album is the reason I got into any slower, downtemp, moody or electronic music. Basically any music that is more about building tension slowly and creating an atmosphere. My love for all dat 90s ambient techno/ IDM plus straight ambient and even post-rock can probably be traced back to how much this album blew my mind as a teenager. I kinda killed it by overplaying it unfortunately but every now and then the mood strikes me and it still holds up pretty well.
I sometimes feel that /mu/ bashes on Blue Lines too much. Yeah, it's not perfect, but it has that perfect anxious atmosphere and it's a great album to listen to on a hot humid day.

I think Dummy has aged a bit yeah, I still like it though. Never got into the likes of Sneaker Pimps and Morcheeba. They struck me as a bit cheesy even then.
I like Mezzanine though. And Portishead arguably improved shitoads and shed the "plasticky" feel to Dummy.
