>Orchid and Morningrise
Black metal influenced Opeth. Morningrise gets a lot of love and a lot of hate, never anything inbetween.
>My Arms, Your Hearse and Still Life
The meat of Opeth and these are their two best albums. Still Life has some funky ass druming from Martin Lopez
>Blackwater Park
This album is what catapulted Opeth into the mainstream. Metal Hammer and just about every metal zine worth its merit compared it to Wildhoney in that an extreme metal album breached into the mainstream
>Deliverance and Damnation
Meant to be a double album, but the ideas were cut, copied and pasted haphazardly. Blackwater Park was admittedly a mess, but these two albums take it even further
>Ghost Reveries
People flipped their shit when Opeth signed to Roadrunner, thinking they were going to sell out and become mallcore shit. They were wrong, but Opeth was solidified as a mainstream global band.
>Watershed
meh
>Heritage and Pale Communion
ayyyy

Instead of feeding the little black babies, we should send over guitars, drums, keyboards n' shit and make those kids do gigs for their food. It's a win-win : they learn a talent, get paid, get fed, make music, and I get my African metal

Agoraphobic Nosebleed is the Monty Python of metal

a shit ton of pretty hilarious seemingly random nonsense that actually took a ton of effort to write (unless if Scott Hull is insane and normally talks like this), and in the case of Altered States of America, there's actually several stories in the album all of them increasingly odd

Altered States of America is the silliest shit the side of Monty Python And The Quest For The Holy Grail

like i said before, Frozen Corpse Stuffed With Dope and Altered States of America may not be particularly good albums but i think that everyone who is interested in music should listen to them at least once.

it's pretty odd for an album with this many tracks to even have published lyrics, but it's obvious that the lyrics are what make these albums what they are, bizarre rants (and sometimes poetry) about american life and culture through the taint of a steroid overdose

Radiophobia, damn good brutal tech death album by Cytotoxin, imagine Wormed but instead of making a cosmic atmosphere rooted in quantum mechanics/theory, having a S.T.A.L.K.E.R.-ish atmosphere, like all the blast beats and meaty technical riff feel like the Chernobyl reactors failing, at least for me

Chuck's songs all use the same exact simple structure. I never got this criticism. The other guy was right when he said that it was repetitive.

No. Some people just wanted to keep NBBMN going for whatever reason even though the whole point is that it's once a year so they made that general. along with Pyrrhon, Artificial Brain and Ulcerate, they're one of those bands who tries to invoke a surreal horror atmosphere, a style that can be tracked down to Gorguts (specially the album Obscura) and seminal band Demilich
i'd rather listen to those 2

>>60853004
i know (they sound nothing like the others too except maybe Pyrrhon) , i meant atmosphere, they're all very much rooted in surreal horror
>>
>>60853029

I don't really get "surreal horror" from Gorguts honestly.
>>
>>60853212
really? it's for the same reasons all those other bands have a ''surreal horror'' atmosphere: heavy use of dissonance (Obscura in particular has almost no consonance whatsoever), disorientating time signatures, abstract lyrics and bizarre, extreme vocal styles to create an extremely dark and dreamy atmosphere

Obscura and Nespithe are by far the most well known albums in this category, even Portal doesn't sound like them at all it still has these elements
>>
>>60851804
i dont like beatdown/slam but this is great
>>
>>60853313

The manner Gorguts does it though doesn't contribute that "surreal horror" to me though, in the way say Portal or other "caverncore" bands do.

>>60853568

100% agreed, the funeral doomy bits are great too.

Not to be rude, but it sounds like you're just not used to 24/7 dissonance, so it gives you those feelings. Obscura is much much different than Nespithe even if they seem the same on the surface.

>Angelscourge - Seraph Impaler

>Wisdom of Shadows - Sciah vosieni

Intrumental atmoshit from Belarus. For fans of Elderwind and similar stuff. These guys have already released two full length albums this year and some smaller releases too, and most of them are available for free on their Bandcamp site.

I've only heard Sad Wings of Destiny and Painkiller but I'm really curious as to how the hell they got from one to the other cause it sounds like a completely different band

What's the best stuff to listen to in between?

The 70s albums that came after Sad Wings.

Plenty of good stuff has hardcore influences, or hell, is hardcore.

They were never good and they got even worse so no.

Judas Priest is a band that's constantly developed their sound and you'll hear a distinct difference between their 70s, 80s and 90s albums. For an even bigger shock go and listen to Rocka Rolla to get an idea of how far the band has actually progressed.

So that Anti piracy thing actually happened?

>>60857261
I've already overdosed on 4chan before.
>>60857261
I haven't really felt the need to revisit Aura since really discovering Roots honestly, but I may soon.
>>
>>60857295
Rocka Rolla is better than everything Judas Priest released in the 90s and onwards.

Have you listened to Peacevile Trio (Anathema, MDB, Paradise Lost)?

Also Evoken, Katatonia and Saturnus
Swallow the Sun are great too
>>
>>60857314
You're not wrong but it's still amazing to compare it to what they became.
>>
>>60857338
No, fuck off.
>>
>>60857357
Why though? Sad Wings is obviously a way better album, but it's a pretty nice bluesy rock foundation.
