I've listened to pretty much all definable genres of music including the /mu/ memes,
played many styles of guitar on many different types of guitars,
and tried many types of drugs while listening to and playing music,
and I'm not shitting on anyone's tastes but I think anyone who doesn't consider Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton to be in a world of their own, playing-wise and improvisationally, is missing out on some of the highest forms of musical appreciation

Well i think the key distinction is that jimi drew influence from non guitar sources because guitar wasn't a mythos yet. He's cited inspiration ranging from the ufo sound effects from twilight zone, to little richard's vox, to coltrane. oh and drugs too maybe(citation need)
Might sound inconsequential but i think it illustrates something. He more or less grew up before the concept of "guitar heroes". Chuck berry aside, his aspirations were never bound by the guitar in any imitative sense. Every subsequent guitarist had to mold himself in some way after jimi either in opposition or in allegiance. Either way it's a deterioration from the original source (insert echoes diminishing metaphor).
Anyway jimi was free from those dogmatism, I think that's the distinguishing feature of all "great" guitarists. They aren't bound by the guitar. Plus he was the first "great" so...auto-Beethoven status.
