Scott Weiland was the best frontman I have ever seen live. The man knew how to control an audience.

I felt much sadder when Staley died even though it was more predictable than Weiland.

He was a talented singer but no one really talked about STP post-2000. It still hits me in the feels

Not to be that guy but I and a good portion of my acquaintances still respect STP and even went to see them when they got back together briefly. Shangri-La Di Da is a pretty good album too.
>>

I disagree, Mainstream rock/alternative stations still have songs like Plush, Interstate Love Song, Vasoline, Sex Type Thing, and Wicked Garden in regular rotation. People still remember STP.
>>

I get what you mean I was just implying that they faded out of the mainstream eye because of all the buttrock bands that came out during that era.
It honestly would've been a pleasure to see these guys live back in the early to mid 90s instead of seeing Weiland on his last legs

Having just woken to the news of this passing, I feel compelled to put pen to paper and pay my respects to Scott. And in that I will not pretend to know more than I know, or add some sad homily to how he loved his life. At least in that, may I now say he is undoubtedly in the arms of grace and eternal love.

May I also offer my humble condolences to his family, friends, and band mates; who have, and are, suffering this great loss. For when anyone as vaunted leaves far too soon, we mourn all that might have been.

As any fan, I find myself reflecting on what I do have in my own treasure chest: in scarce moments where Scott and I spoke as contemporaries or competitors, and got to know each as people other past the footlights and shadows we were so busy casting to the world. It may seem trite in reflection, but I'd try to make him giggle when I saw that the manic whirl of the dumb parties we were at (in Hollywood, no less!) might be causing undue stress.

It was, I'd guess you'd say, my way of apology for having been so critical of STP when they appeared on the scene like some crazy, man-fueled rocket. And not only was the knight up front freshly handsome to a fault, but he could sing too! As any supreme actor gives a real and different voice to each character played.
It was STP's 3rd album that had got me hooked, a wizardly mix of glam and post-punk, and I confessed to Scott, as well as the band many times, how wrong I'd been in assessing their native brilliance. And like Bowie can and does, it was Scott's phrasing that pushed his music into a unique, and hard to pin down, aesthetic sonicsphere.

Lastly, I'd like to share a thought which though clumsy, I hope would please Scott In Hominum. And that is if you asked me who I truly believed were the great voices of our generation, I'd say it were he, Layne, and Kurt.

So it goes beyond tragedy to say it is we who lost them, and not the other way round...

>>
What did Malkmus mean when he called him an elegant bachelor?
>>
>Dear Scott,

>Let us start by saying thank you for sharing your life with us. Together we crafted a legacy of music that has given so many people happiness and great memories. The memories are many, and they run deep for us.

>We know amidst the good and the bad you struggled, time and time again. It’s what made you who you were. You were gifted beyond words, Scott. Part of that gift was part of your curse.

>With deep sorrow for you and your family, we are saddened to see you go.
All of our love and respect.

>We will miss you brother,

To be fair, I feel like the Pumpkins wouldn't have been as good as they were if Billy wasn't a pretentious prick. It's what allowed him to experiment with his music.
>>
>>60813152
At least they tried, something Pavement never ever did. They were too cool to try. That's why their career didn't pan out to anything other than a couple footnotes. At least Smashing Pumpkins made Mellon Collie and Siamese Dream. Slanted & Enchanted and that other album were wet farts.

Weiland started good, but he got worse and worse as time went on. The fact that I can enjoy all the singles of Core even though the radio kicks them to death day in and day out is testament to how good he is; even the most annoying repetition can't kill it for me.

Sad that he pretty much started on a downward spiral after Purple, but I guess that's the way the celebrity lifestyle will do you: some can handle it, some can't, and some just abuse the everloving fuck out of it like he did.

I know the guy was influenced by Scott and all, but if there is a great beyond, seeing that this is the kind of shit his influence brought upon the world will probably make him turn in his grave instead of rest in peace. I know I wouldn't want to die knowing that a porn star-fucking manchild like Chester Bennington was brought to music by listening to my shit. I'd feel horrible if I wound up passing the torch to THAT, in my former band in life and in music at large in death.

>>60815993
Porn stars get paid to fuck on screen and make a bunch of noise; Playboy centerfolds get paid to pose nude in erotic positions. They are the "classy" alternative.

Kind of like how nu metal is down, dirty, and ugly while cock metal was slick, clean, and cookie-cutter as the blond-haired blue-eyed chicks who used to rule Playboy.

I don't like post-grunge at all and think bands like Creed/Nickelback/Lifehouse/etc. should have never existed but I've always thought STP were pretty good. Sure they're kinda generic and kinda similar to that shit and the Bush/Foo Fighters/etc. shit but they knew how to make catchy pop rock, had good guitar work, and while the vocals weren't original they were great rock vocals that fit the lyrics/sound. Good band. Tiny Music is their best. They actually kinda do something different and move towards a more 60s direction rather than Pearl Jam lite.
>>
I never liked Tiny Music

I guess it sounds a bit more 'indie' than the more hard rockish polished grunge of the first two so it probably gets more cred...

I remember digging the riffs but I remember getting it and you could hear how fucked up Weiland was at that point in how he sang on it, all kinda high pitched, weak voiced and off.

I was watching videos of Daniel Darc from a few months before he died and he was pretty much a hollow shell of a person. Balding, big gut, pretty much totally late mumbling of the lyrics to his songs that he used to sing with energy.

Easy: He's not a "grunge" musician. Core only sounded "grungy" because everything else at the time sounded "grungy". In reality, if Core was released in 1990 or 1989 like it should have been, there would be no stigma.
>>
>>60827986
He was surprisingly versatile; I don't think he really took advantage of his talent as much as he could have. I'm not an STP fan at all but I think his contributions were great.

>>
>>60831068
Yeah, but I've encountered quite many people who detest all post grunge (even STP) and would still praise Bush. I think it's because they're British so the fact that some Brits imitated Nirvana and Pearl Jam for success is somewhat endearing to Americans? I don't know, their music was average but the lyrics were always TERRIBLE as you could probably see. Where STP got a bad rap (still does) Bush seemed to get a pass for being derivative, at least for their first album.
>>

Huh, that's a shame. Especially since STP wrote a lot of great music and it sounds pretty clear Bush was probably just trying to hit that Nirvana money.

You didn't even post the worst of them. "Swim" and "Bomb" are literally the worst lyrics ever written (and the songs are shit too). It's like they realized Nirvana could get away with nonsense stream of consciousness lyrics and then just started scribbling away inane idiocy.

These are my favorite bad lyrics ever:

14 hairdryers
swimming to you
flame on earth desire
poor on the rise
rich on the fall

tell me what that album did so amazingly that Murmer, Reckoning, Life's Rich Pageant, and Fables of the Reconstruction didn't already do. It does not deserve its status and you know it. I can understand Neutral Milk Hotel and their earnest mystique, but Pavement is so utterly useless.

I was listening to the radio on the way into work on Wednesday and the DJ said that when Scott Weiland played a show in Detroit about a year ago, he was the only person to get an interview with him. He said that interview went so badly that he promised he'd never air it. Who would have thought that Scott would die the next day.
>>
>>60838711

It's literally people who have only heard Plush.

I don't think either ripped the other off, but there's better evidence for Vedder ripping off Weiland than vice versa. Supposedly he was in San Diego for a while when STP was still Mighty Joe Young, and they were known in the scene in that area by that time.

MJY pre dates Vedder's singing career, and Weiland has the same kind of style on their first demos from 1990.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8VROjKDiBs

same style as on Core, but pre dating Vedder's singing if my timeline is right.

But Core was released over a year after PJ's Ten, so people assumed Weiland was ripping Vedder off.

I still don't hear it.

Like the other guy said, I guess Plush sounds kind of like he might be sort of semi pseudo ripping off Vedder, but even then that's a stretch.

So that's one song for weak evidence, and the entire rest of his catalog with STP, solo, and VR, proving otherwise.

Scott was also by far the best performer out of all the "grunge" era bands.

Layne had the voice but couldn't perform for shit,
vedder's voice was nowhere near as good
Cobain's voice didn't come close
Cornell could compete but scott was the better performer

When he was on Scott was the full package and anyone who spouts hurr perl jam/vedder ripoff!! hasn't fucking heard anything besides core which is probably their 4th best album anyway

No one in the Seattle grunge scene liked STP - they were viewed as the first (of many) out of town corporate acts cashing in on 'our' scene.

Weiland came across as nothing but a poor man's Vedder (maybe he was technically first, I dunno) but Pearl jam was known and had a sound before STP came along so they seemed like they were aping them.

Source: Me, I was in my teens and early 20s in Seattle in the late 80s/90s and really into the grunge scene, before it was even called 'grunge'

I always especially hated their name as well. At first i thought it was referencing Temple Of The Dog and Stone Gossard but it tunrs out they just liked the STP patches that were obligatory on the hipster standard garage jackets of the time so they just picked words to fit.

To me they're just a slightly more talented Candlebox and basically proto-post-grunge

That's fine and it definitely shouldn't come as a shock to anyone. A handful of bands were mocked in that scene, even when some of the "newcomers" were straight up better than some of the established well-respected locals.

I get what it's like having a scene that you get to call your own and not wanting outsiders to invade. I actually do. Not even to sound insulting, but I don't think history really gives a shit what we think. Sometimes bands who get their start coming from elsewhere are just better, even if we feel like they invaded our local exclusive music club.
