Sometimes life goes in a direction you do not anticipate. It's no reason to get upset.
whats that jap avant-garde metal band that is really just avant-prog? it has a two part very short name

i don't think they were shooting for having songs be differentiable

>>60788339
nice rym taste
I finally got around to listening to Cynic - Focus.
It sucks. I really don't see why it gets the acclaim it gets. I can totally see the influence it had on future tech bands though, but that's it.

I fucked up and put Altars of Absolute Madness twice on there. The second one should be replaced by Cluster's Zuckerzeit.
>>60787230
>>60788311
but dir en grey is popular with the weebs so they're not allowed
>>60788339
>>60788442

>>60788372
i mean, like the big names. after the burial and veil of maya are there. BOO are very similar but... not on there
>>60788311
the explanations they give for not allowing them are hilariously dumb. some guy said that when he listened to DSS it was mostly "j-pop and mallcore" which uh
it's even dumber since they have faith no more and mr bungle on there
>>60788475
metal-archives love weeb metal though, they used to circlejerk sigh all the time
>>60787149
4.5 stars, amazing album. Skin Coat is fantastic

>>60788545
asriel is a pretty metal goat shota tho
>>60788484
o-ok
>>60788538
The Soft Bulletin was the other mistake I made on this one. I actually made this chart a couple of months ago to show it on facebook, and around that time I wasn't feeling that positive about TSB. I'm back to loving it, but I forgot to put it back.
And about Obscura, The Erosion of Sanity is my favorite Gorguts release now, otherwise it would be there.
>>60788583
for a second i was like, wait, 11eyes is a meme game? but then i remembered undertale
>>60787183

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0miw_zYniIw
>>60788140
Really? I liked it, but I'm with the other anon, it wasn't really unique in any significant way. Solid death metal, but not much else to be said about it
>>60788694
Yesssss one of my favorite demos ever. Miles better than Mitochondrion.
>tfw the beginning of Hallucinogen
What did you think of their newest EP? Personally it was a huge letdown. I'm not sure they'll ever top MMXIII.
>>60788513
Silent tear, pinned, screamless. Like a dead pile, time, seamless
Silent tear. Human shield
Say it, say - you’ll give me your skin…skin…skin
Fold back, crawl inside, your pinned
Like…wet…pile… Peel…now…feel
I wear, a human shield. Through the elements, stay warm
I put you on, crawl inside. Human shield, skin fold back, crawl inside
Some weird lyrics on this album.
>>60788789
desu I haven't really listened to the new EP. heard a bit of it and it just didn't strike me the same way MMXIII did. it's fucking insane. 7:20 is one of my favourite breaks ever
>>60788733
Yes, upon release /mu/ saw it as a "really unique and forward thinking" tech death release.
The compositions aren't too bad, but the production makes it really unenjoyable.
chill shit
Are there some small and simple things that you guys can't help to love on metal songs?
I just love every song on which a band refers to Jesus as "nazarene", the word sounds cool as fuck.
Seeing these guys tonight, pretty excited.

Yeah cool, but that doesn't change the fact that you can help having some bacterias around (especially in a place like a bathroom, where most people have their toothbrush) by doing something so simple as leaving the toilet seat down.
>>60789390
I count these
To Live is to Die
Escape
Eye of the Beholder
Seek of Destroy
in addition to what we know Call of Ktulu to say Metallica stole a fuckload from this guy, no wonder they turned to shit on their own after only 7 years

>>60788932
Those draining sink gutturals where you can hear the air coming out too. Except when that's all they do - it's hard to find.

SLAM THAT MOTHA FUCCCIN REC BUTTON
>>60790190
a lot of these bands are pretty mediocre t-b-h
>>60788932
Harmonized singing on melodeath. When it's actually good.
Bits of chugging like in the second verse of Pacific Grim. But not overdone.
Shrieks and deep gutturals that literally sound like they're from the bowels of hell.
>>60790190
Who ordered the big meme supreme?
>>60787149
>>60787185
>>60787549
seconding this
Things Viral is a slightly better album imo but they are both really good
don't let the "drone metal" tag turn you off
James Plotkin (Phantomsmasher & OLD) is involved so it's pretty much guaranteed to be interesting
>>60790039
That band Dripping where the vocalist actually sounds like a leaky facet. ROCK HARD
>>60790043
Anthropocene Extinction has a lot of little things I absolutely love in metal.
>them murky gutturals on Clandestine Ways
>that soaring chorus on Circo Inhumanitas
>that proggy whirlwind of picking on Plagueborne
>that high shriek and high guitar bit on Mammals In Babylon ("Too many people in this WOOORRRRLLLLD")
Talking about it makes me look like a shill though. Can't get enough of that album.
>>60790039
man, to each his own and all that, but how can you hate that
>>60790385
I listened to one or two tracks off of AE and it didn't hit me the same way MoI did. I'll check out those tracks tho, they sound p dank
>>60788932
Double-bass abuse, especially technical footwork with not otherwise wanky drums.
WEEEEEOOOWWWWW guitar squeals in music where it's not normally common (Nattens Madrigal for example).
Harsh vocals where they're basically shouting with extreme force instead of growling (Dirge).
Unusual instruments used tastefully in the context of the song.
>>60790596
what's some good double-bass abuse
i also enjoy this
>>60790627
Nile
what the actual fuck is Vitriol
why is it on this album
why do I enjoy it so much
>>60790385
Speaking of AE, I can't get enough of that WEEEEOOOWWWW sound on Clandestine Ways.

>>60790627
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WM4QuZlLC0U
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyV8LwjXXqU these are some favorites, I love the shitty drum machine sound.
I've also been listening to a lot of slam and shit lately where they do rapid and tasteless triplet bursts and stuff with the kicks, in conjunction with the chugging and ree-ing
>>60790715
Vitriol sucked.
If this album had been an EP of Fanfare, Kel Valhaal, Quetzalcoatl, and Reign Array it would have been God-tier.
Lol dragonforce at the game awards.
>>60790596
The guitar squeal in the first fill of Hymn I on Nattens Madrigal is fucking insane
>>60788932
Overtly flagrant abuse of blast beats
The more, faster and angrier and louder, the better
blastbeatfags are just jazzfags with a superiority complex
>>60790596
>>60791174
I'm like the opposite of that. Double bass and blast beats are the shit. But they're even better when used to accent the right moment for that extra intensity. I like a d-beat better as a filler drumming pattern.
>>60788932
ping snare
on the other end of the spectrum, piano breaks are always good as fuck
>>60791214
do you exclusively listen to doom or something?
Is The Satanist just babby's first avantblack?
>>60791234
""jazz fusion"" breaks
>>60791335
How is The Satanist avant black? It's blackened death.
>>60791335
That makes no sense. It's just blackened death.
>>60791375
>>60791411
Shit, looks like I had the wrong assumption. What would be considered avantblack?
>>60791262
no but i can tell the difference between making music and just showing off
besides most blastbeatfags use those stupid electronic things that make it sound like they are hitting the bass drum faster than they really are(i forget what they're called)
>>60791479
Triggers?
>>60791479
You mean triggers.
>>60791493
yea
>tfw I have a soft spot for triggered, overproduced drumming
>>60791479
Triggers/modules. It doesn't make it faster, it just has more attack and a consistent timbre/level, so you can play more lightly but still cut through a mix. I think triggers sound pretty shit, but I understand why they are used live. For my own music, I naturalize every bass drum hit to achieve the same effect but with a more organic kick sound.
>>60791468
Arcturus
>>60791532
But only bad triggers sound like shit. Practically everyone other than fully acoustic groups use triggers since they allow for differences in timbre.
>>60791479
nothing wrong with using triggers as long as they aren't being used to compensate for lack of skill. a lot of modern metal wouldn't sound as good with a more organic drum sound.
DT sucks but here's an interview with mike portnoy where he explains it quite well
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dc-nIEEyR3k
>>60791593
Yeah, it's just one of those things we've become accustomed to. I suppose there's some bias, in that I only notice triggered kicks when they sound bad. See: Battles in the North, hoo boy that's some nasty pedaling.
>>60791370
i said piano breaks. metal bands don't know how to incorporate jazz at all, with few exceptions (peculate, starring janet leigh, virulence and ephel duath are what come to mind)
>>60787230

Peace Sells isn't jazz by any means but it has a distinct jazz influence

I swear, it sounds way more natural. I always thought it was odd that several songs were rooted in F minor, rather than E.
Thank you, lone Ukrainian man.
Here's a cool sludge band I came across
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6-aYmqwDcc
>>60791787
i don't want to mention them too much but yeah when they do the piano break on Orange Vigilantes (for example) it's fucking tight
call me a fag if you want but i think bands shouldn't bother recording an album that they can't perform live
>>60792143
I'm pretty sure that's the most common opinion.
>>60792143
ehh I think studio only bands are fine, but bands like rings of saturn that misrepresent themselves in the studio and then go on tour and can't play their own shit are cancer
>>60792143
THIS TIMES A MILLION
They may not have the biggest or best sound systems or have to sacrifice because of venue size, but if they can't even play their shit at regular speed or accuracy, they can fuck right off.
>>60792189

it's like he didn't even try to hide it
>>60792143
I think bands just shouldn't bother going on tour if they can't actually play the music live.
>>60792270
That obviously speed up section from 1:27 - 1:32 is the best part.
>>60792229
That doesn't even sound like a guitar. Sounds like a keytar but with strings. What the fuck is going on?
>>60792398
it's overdubbed bullshit that the guitarist can't actually play
>>60792398
It's just the guitar pro file being played over the video.
>>60792143
faggot retard
>>60792316
it's within the realm of possibility that someone can move their fingers that fast but i'm no guitarist so i guess i can't say it isn't sped up
>>60792919
Nah it's not about the speed. It's about how erratic and jumpy the motion is. Nobody moves like that.
Also if you watch it closely, you can see that sometimes the picking is off on the audio and that the fingers don't quite line up with the attack of the notes. Plus, you can't actually hear him pick.
>>60792959
ohhhhhh
again i'm no guitarist so i wouldn't have caught the misalignment
>>60793036
You don't have to be a guitarist to notice senpai. Just use your ears and eyes.
>>60792143
>>60792166
>>60792193
>muh authenticity
>>60793259
Yeah why on earth would anyone want musicians to be 100% legit in their skills. Fucking casuals.
>>60793259
Yeah. How dare musicians be able to play what they write!
>>60793284
>>60793303
not him, but there's nothing wrong with making music that extends beyond your physical capabilities
studio manipulation is a good thing to have access to
it only gets scummy when you play live and try to pretend you can actually play it normally
>>60793284
>>60793303
I think there's a place in the world for music only technology can produce. As long as the creators make no pretenses, it's fine. At the end of the day, you can still enjoy it.
What happens in Highlander (The One) could never happen on stage. That's his voice, of course, but it takes a lot of preparation and attempts. I'm still glad they did it. I enjoy a few dragonforce songs too. Not really interesting in seeing them live, but it's still enjoyable music.
>>60793520
The climax of "Highlander" doesn't even contain the highest notes he sings with LH, but they are sung with a lot of power and impact. You're still right, recording a single track or take is very very different from playing a full live setlist.

Studio only bands are fine if it's clear that they are studio only

Well yeah, but that's a full 30 second sequence of mindblowing range and power. I think his highest notes are pretty short, he probably could do those live in his prime. I don't think even Daniel in his prime or anyone on earth for that matter could deliver that after a full setlist flawlessly in time. It's still purely his talent and I think saying he shouldn't be able to demonstrate what he's technically capable of just because it would be impractical live is kind of a shit way of looking at things.
Recommend me the best glam

i didnt listen to it and i suspect it's like most post-djent albums in that it's just post-rock which people think is jazz because of prominent bass
>people in /metal/ unironically think battalions of fear isn't blind guardian's best album

Any fellow danefags going to see Slægt tomorrow?

What's the difference between "influenced by" and "a rip off of"? Can something be a rip-off if it's actually good? Atleast, as good as its influence? Is being a rip-off of another persons style just mean you're influenced by them but fail to meat their standards?
Pic related. People bandwagon against this for being a Devin Townsend rip off, but Dan Wieten is good at singing, and the Yes-esque vocal harmonies, other influences, and just awesome and beautiful aesthetics make this wonderful to me, so I don't really see a meaning to any sort of similarity.

Why would you think that? That's not what the Last Skyharbor was like?
The harmony composition is breathtaking on this album. I mean, when I say jazz influenced, I mean the utilization of seventh chords and some sort of notably complex modulations outside of straightforward transpositions.
What's your thoughts on sounds like that? Sithu Aye, Plini, Chimp Spanner, Etc.

Sorry.

oh it's YOU who posted that
calling something jazzy because of 7ths is about as facile as description of jazz as you could get
jazz is loose and improvisatory and metal, as a rule, isn't

>post-djent
Literally, what?

my brother was the dummer in a band that was a Shadowsfall ripoff. i never said anything to him because i didn't want to be an asshole, but it was obvious as fuck that they stole pretty much everything from Shadowsfall(Of One Blood to be specific). it was fucking retarded because my brother's band was literally signed to metalblade at the same time shadowsfall was touring Of One Blood. i kept thinking, what the fuck? how has nobody noticed this?
i think a band being influenced by other bands is common and completely fine. it's pretty neat to notice subtle things that you've heard before. but if you're recognizing riffs, beats and melodies from other bands then it's a ripoff and totally uncool.

Needs at least one album with Buckethead. Maybe Dawn of the Deli Creeps?
