When he stopped the drugs. The last two albums have been pretty bad
>>
Probably when he made the dishwasher album

I've never sat down and listened to a full NIN album. I've heard a few songs here and there, and while I think the production is always top-notch, the lyrics and singing always came off as pretty 2edgy4u and kind of cringey. The type of stuff a 14 year old going through her emo phase would quote on her Facebook. Should I give some of their albums a shot? Or is my first impression of them pretty accurate?
>>
Is there a Downward Spiral Instrumental album? If cop that in a heartbeat.
>>
>>60779647
Are you seriously saying that his movies soundtrack are bad ? Or are you talking about Hesitation Marks and The Slip ?
Either way you're wrong, mate.
>>
>>60779691
Listen to the early stuff. Pretty Hate Machine, Broken EP, The Downward Spiral. That should tell you whether you'd like the general drift of NIN.
>>
>>60779691
Lyrics pretty much spot on. But don't let that put you off. The Fragile is personally my favourite album, With Teeth not far behind.

Listen to The Downward Spiral all the way through like you were watching a movie or reading a Fight Club-like/Truman Capote-like novel. There's details and subtleties in the sound like I've never heard anywhere else.

I hate how anything that deals with negative themes of depression and suffering of the human condition is considered "2edgy4u". I think Reznor captures the feelings of existential angst and depression really well, maybe it comes off as cringey to someone who's never experience any discomfort and suffering in life, or ever thought deeply about the inevitable pull towards the void that we're all destined towards. Why is it "cringey" for artists to acknowledge any of the negative darker parts of this reality
>>
>>60779874
I think it's because Trent doesn't write with hindsight, the way Lou Reed or Mark Linkous would write. There's no poetic veil, no disguise. Trent actually puts you in the shoes of the person in despair and writes what he actually feels in his worst moments. I always loved that he wasn't afraid of doing that it's actually pretty hard to find any other musician that does it the way he does it.

>>
>>60779874
I do deal with depression, and I like tons of music that deals with negative and dark themes. My problem with Reznor's lyrics is that there's no subtlety to them. He says exactly what he means, with very little elements of any poetry or artistry. I'm sure some people like that, and that's fine, but to me, it just comes off as very heavy-handed and amateur-ish
>>
>>60779996

It's true that he goes right to the point but you can't listen to something like The Becoming, Somewhat Damaged or The Wretched and tell me there's no artistry. It's written perfectly in context of the album, it paints you the anger and the deception of the situation in an amazing way.

He uses the word "I" far too much.
>>
>>60780076
What?
>>
>>60780090
Trent's writing is very egocentric.
>>
>>60780076
Would like it if he used the word "we"? "we hurt ourselves again", kind of like golum
>>
>>60780136
No, I'd prefer if he wrote about other people's feelings or perspective on the world.

Even in Year Zero where he writes about stuff outside of himself it's from seeing that sort of thing through his eyes.

>>60780118

It's about his feels, bro.

You just don't get it.
>>
>>60780168
>It's introverted as opposed to extroverted, what's your point?

You don't have to be extroverted to write about other people. It's called having empathy.

Any way, a lot of his writing lacks poetry or imagery, it's raw feelings. Take that as you will.
>>
>>60780150
The things he writes about are universal feelings, the individual experience is something universal and more relateable to many people including myself. You must be a strong extroverted feeler, trent's music is very introverted feeling
>>

This is the first day of my last days
I built it up now I take it apart climbed up real high now fall down real far
No need for me to stay the last thing left I just threw it away
I put my faith in God and my trust in you
Now there's nothing more fucked up I could do

Wish there was something real wish there was something true
Wish there was something real in this world full of you

I'm the one without a soul I'm the one with this big fucking hole
No new tale to tell twenty-six years on my way to Hell
Gotta listen to your big time hard line bad luck FIST FUCK
Don't think you're having all the fun
You know me I hate everyone

Wish there was something real wish there was something true
Wish there was something real in this world full of you

I want to but I can't turn back
But I want to
>>
>>60780228
>You must be a strong extroverted feeler
Assumptions, I'm an inward-thinking person, but that's not something you should confine yourself to when writing songs. It gets old fast.

The thing about the way that Trent writes lyrics is that it is very hit or miss. When he misses it sounds whiny, petty, or juvenile, but when he hits, he hits.
>>
>>60780201

The individual experience is much more interesting that the collective experience, every individual who makes up the collective is much has a much more interesting story than looking at everything as the collective

The only NIN album I simply can not get into is The Downward Spiral. There's something that's blocking me from enjoying it. I feel like I'm missing something. I know and appreciate why it's a great work of art but I can't see it as something that is fun to sit down and listen to. I never want to pick it over his other stuff.

He was never on heroin in the first place you morons, it was coke. The only time he ever did heroin was when he mistaken some for coke and almost died.

Also, he wrote this song when was coked out, which was his worst.

Trent writes in first person all the time because most of his songs were born from personal journal entries. Pretty Hate Machine and NIN as a whole was born from Trent simply singing his Journal entries over music.

His lyrics may at times be cringey, but depression kind of is if you think about it. His style makes it feel like you're opening somebody's journal and reading from it.

I have been into industrial for a pretty long time and I still think its so crazy how I just cant stand NIN despite liking almost every non-NIN album he produces ;1000 Homo DJs was fun, his soundtracks for Natural Born Killers and Lost Highway were good, The Coil album he mastered was bittersweet and Niggy Tardust by Saul Williams is still killer and probably one of the best albums by both artists (unless Martyr Loser King is as good as the hype claims)

Yet when I try and get into his main NIN stuff I just hear music other people did better. Its not entirely terrible, but people like Coil, Thirlwell and even KMFDM did his whole shtick better.
>>
>>60783162
That's because you listen to it with an Industrial point of view. NIN is fucking nothing like KMFDM, thank god.
>>
>>60777514

I don't know, the thing about reznor's music is he combines all of those artists things into his own. I do think those artists do certain things better than him, but that doesn't make his stuff worse, it's all just more music with good influences behind it.
>>
>>60779691
>listening to lyrics in songs

it's like you don't even enjoy music
>>
He cared less about Nine Inch Nails and more about film scores. Not saying it's a bad thing, the Gone Girl score was probably one of the best I've heard.
>>
>>60784596
>only listening to half of a song.
Are you even paying attention?
>>
>>60785770
If Reznor could just go to writing OSTs full time, I would not be upset if NIN was neglected/ended.
