What's an artist, album, or genre you never thought you'd get into but ended up doing so?
The Smiths
I never thought I would like noise but that's what I'm listening to right now
hip hop
Danny Brown
David Bowie
black metal
Ariana Grande
I want to wrap myself in her voice and just be cozy there forever
n/a i have perfect taste the first time every time.
>>60725355
i actually got into it in my freshman year of high school after hearing ITaNoMtHUB dor the first time
>>60725303
Same. Like, let's take Merzbow for example. First thing I listened to by him was Venerology. I hated it and thought to myself that there's no way people unironically enjoy this shit. After a month I randomly decided to give Merzbeat a try, and due to it actually being listenable, it helped me rethink the concept of noise music. After listening to that album and similar ones, it made me more open to the idea of the harsher albums by him, such as Dharma, Electric Salad, and Noisembryo.
Now I can listen to pretty much anything noise related. Don't know why but it helps me clear my mind and properly think.
I would have called it "Lilith Fair crap" when I was younger, but now it's one of my favorites
>>60725265
Doom Metal, Jazz, hipoty hop, Yes, fugazi,
Harsh Noise, Hipster hops, Death Grips, Drone, Math Rock, Funeral Doom, Drone Doom, Doom Metal... Basically all things drone and doom.
Shoegaze/dream-pop/etc.
I always thought "lol that's for teenage girls." I was right, but it turns it out its really good teenage girl music.
I used to talk shit on punk, but I started to listen to Crass because Stephen Ignorant did some shit with Current 93, and I've been listening to nothing but D.I.R.T., Flux Of Pink Indians, Poison Girls, Rudimentary Peni, Crass, and The Subhumans all week
Real talk? Pink Floyd.
I don't know why, but I used to just hate them so much for some reason. Once I actually listened to DSOTM in its entirety, I realized I was just being a moron.
Kanye
Pop music in general, but mainly synth and psychadelic.
This is coming from someone who used to think metal was the only music that was good.
Neutral Milk Hotel... Back when they were the biggest meme to ever hit mu. I was confused by how much I enjoyed. Them lyrics.
>>60725781
DSOTM is one of those albums that are easy to hate because of their supposed importance and popularity.
But then you sit down and listen actually quit enjoy it.
I did the exact same thing with Revolver. I avoided the Beatles entirely before that.
>>60725862
That's how it was with pet sounds. I'd heard God Only Knows and just totally wrote it off, listened to it earlier this year coming down from a trip and I can't get enough
Death Grips and Swans
>>60726173
One cannot escape the memes.
Pop
Literally nothing wrong with it, once I got over pretentiousness a whole new world of music opened up
used to listen to almost all alternative/boom bap from like 07-011 but then i became the trap expert
Genesis. Thought of them as just an 80s pop group until I learned about the stuff they wrote with Hackett and Gabriel, and now they're one of my top 5.
Vaporwave.
black and death metal, though i still cant stand typical satanic corpsepaint black metal and repetitive gore-oriented lyrics in death metal.
an example of an artist i like from each genre would be emperor and edge of sanity
ive been listening to djent a lot recently
honestly not as bad as everyone makes it out to be at all
country. 1940-1965 changed my mind. still can't fuck with anything recent, besides the occasional: https://youtu.be/oLprAUar11U
>>60726227
a small ass-world tho where everyone pretty much dresses the same
hip hop
>>60725265
emo
because whiny fags
but actually
whiny fags backed by good musicians
mcr can still go suck a dick though
Waka Flocka Flame
Death Grips
Prog. Rock
Blues
Zappa or Beefheart
Any electronic music but mostly ambient stuff
The Smiths
>>60725846
Underrated Jesus Lizard album coming thru, I listened to that one before hearing their others and I really liked it. Once you hear Goat and Liar you can see how it pales in comparison, but it's still a great record.
Also techno/house/dubstep, I used to hate electronic dance music of any sort, but now It's probably half the music I listen to
synthpop
Never thought Id like Krautrock, boy was I wrong..
>>60725265
Hip hop and cool jazz
Lana Del Rey
dubstep
Sarah Mclachlan
may as well post my shame
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKd5UMYdRjU
>>60725265
Metal in general, noise rock, noise music, industrial music, ambient music, jazz in general...
Pretty much everything I listen to right now is the opposite of what I would have expected.
Never thought I'd get into Animal Collective because I thought it was for shallow, pretentious tumblr indeh teens. Which was all true. But they're now one of my favorite bands.
Radiohead and Animal Collective
>>60725284
same. used to fucking hate them. i still think morrissey is a cunt, however, that self-titled is like one of my favorite albums now
Radiohead
Crust punk or Gothic rock
i used to hate burzum. went full circle. i think varg is lowkey homophobic and racist which is a bummer though.
Classical
Id have to say either Deadmau5 which I still think is garbage, but still listen to him.
or
remember as a kid you would hit an all static "porn channel", well this new stuff im getting into is kinda like that. White noise backed by dirty 80's porn
>>60725265
Hip hop. Kanye West. He's now my favourite hip hop artist too.
Singer/songwriter
>>60726467
>mcr can still suck a dick though.
Kill yourself.
>>60725265
I'm starting to get into Stockhausen. I listened to Gessang and Kontake a while back and thought it was interesting, but not really enjoyable. Then I listened to Prozession a few days ago and I think I'm on board.
>>60725445
I kinda started the opposite way. I listened to Pulse Demon, and I still think it's his best album. I tried Merzbeat, but got bored and turned it off.
Also I think Kazumoto Endo's While You Were Out is way overrated on /mu/ because it's accessible noise music.
>>60727491
>White noise backed by dirty 80's porn
...
Link?
>>60727564
Your teenage nostalgia is shit compared to my teenage nostalgia
Doom Metal. I'm a jazzfag.
Hardcore punk
I still don't like it but i'm into it
>>60727664
>parker fly in the backgroud
:3
>>60727674
>i still dont like it, but i'm into it
This is 90% of /mu/ pretentious hipsters who "like" music to standout and be hip
Grindcore. Remember first hearing it when I was 11 and thinking it was on the same level as deathcore (which I also hated)
Now I dig a lot of grindcore and still hate deathcore lmao
>>60727722
whats some good grindcore aside frmo nasum?
>>60727692
Yeah it's kinda funny because if I were that guy I would have gone straight for that shred machine, not some lame ass octave circus with a neck the size of a tree trunk
>>60727733
not that guy but check out suffocate for fuck sake. they're intense.
>>60727597
No.
Belle and Sebastian
>>60726562
this album is so fucking good
>>60727664
for me it was the other way round
>>60725265
used to be opposed to hip-hop when i was young, but now its breddy good
goth and post punk
synthpop
the germs
LCD Soundsystem
burzum
Traditional sea shanties. I was watching a movie that had some sailors singing salty old sea shanties as they sailed, and since then it's all I've been playing when I sing and play guitar. They are immensely satisfying to sing and play as loud as you can.
>>60725265
Listening to Nujabes and J Dilla got me into hip hop
Never thought I could get into music released after the 70s, needless to say I was pretty wrong.
Vaporwave
Death Grips
Oh god I'm a meme
Nine Inch Nails
>>60728897
Same.
Going to disney sea made me love italian wind orchestra
being a weaboo made me love YMO made me love Ryuichi Sakamoto made me love contemporary classical made
Bomberman adventure 64 made me love DnB, lead me to soichi terada, and now I love house.
>>60725344
>>60725798
>>60725845
These, desu, senpai
Mostly Bowie and pop music though, I'm always skeptical about popular things because they're well liked by a lot of people and most people give very little real regard for what music they listen to. Warsawa changed that for me though. Also Love Live. The latter could just be stockholm syndrome though.
Talk Talk
>>60727491
>remember as a kid you would hit an all static "porn channel", well this new stuff im getting into is kinda like that. White noise backed by dirty 80's porn
link please
Justin Bieber. His new album is pretty good tbqh fám
Vaporwave and Animal Collective
I am obsessed with Strawberry Jam
>>60725284
this, dream pop and other gay 'indie' music. i only like a handful of artists, though, most of it is pretty bland.
I used to poke fun at my old boss for listening to Neutral Milk Hotel-- not out of spite, just because I had never listened to them and knew of ITAOTS' as a meme and a meme alone.
God, I want to kill myself.
>>60727564
What, you actually like mcr? Why haven't you killed yourself yet? I thought you faggots enjoyed cutting yourselves.
>>60725265
Metal
Meme grips
>>60725284
Same. Whenever my dad would play the Smiths I would roll my eyes,it finally clicked when I moved out.
Pop punk.
Turns out there's a lot of uplifting and catchy stuff after you've sifted through the appalling mainstream bands.
Country music
Enya. Put on her new album just now and I'm enjoying myself.
rap/hiphop in a phsae of highschool
>>60727376
Yeah, morrisey being a dick honestly sold me on the smiths. It kinda sets them apart from a lot of other "woe is me"/type bands, since the guy singing knows he's a bit of an ass. Dude can be funny
>>60727433
>Crust punk
Welcome to the squat
anything with screaming vocals. this was when i was a lot younger, but i would just instantly dismiss anything with screaming vocals because i thought it was stupid.
now i tend to get chills from hearing certain screaming vocals.
the vocals on Lost in the Sound of Separation by Underoath are so satisfying to listen to it's unreal
