You're all correct.

Of course it's already out, literally no one expected his best album to be ahead of him.

Look, it's Bowie's best album!
>>
Children please stop squabbling. The only way to view Bowie's best output is self-titled through to Scary Monsters considered a single body of work, including Pin Ups.

While I am a huge fan of later Bowie, the 70s streak was the greatest flawless victory ever achieved by anyone.

this
>>
>>60722019

Ashes to Ashes is my favourite song of all time. It is literally perfect.
>>
>>60722450
I dig this view. It also sounds completely like nothing else and manages to be a funky dance tune that is also hauntingly cold and isolating
>>
>>60722478

I was eight when it came out. The video blew my tiny mind.
>>
>>60723195
I wasn't born but the video still blew my mind when I did see it
>>
>>60723224

I went to the David Bowie Is exhibit and saw the clown outfit and the original cover artwork, literally started crying tears of joy at this snapshot of 35 years ago.
>>
>>60723296
That sounds pretty cool man. Ashes to Ashes was my Dad's favourite song too, he'd always say that it really drew him back to the start of the 80s, which is interesting as I think it sounds so unique and timeless.
>>
>>60722019
the contrarians bowie album, along with earthling and outside
>>
>>60723405
You mean Patrician
>>
>>60723342

Yeah it was a pretty interesting time. Video clips were becoming the norm and cool video innovations were also coming out. Home computers and video games were also mind blowing at the time.

Bowie was something I knew my whole life but that one song Ashes to Ashes pretty much defined the 80s. Come to think of it, Scary Monsters is a pretty innovative song as well, just not as innovative as Ashes.
>>
>>60720938
>tfw Outside is my favourite
>>
>>60723494

Outside is a pretty amazing record. It sounds better today than it did 20 years ago, way ahead of its time. I'm starting to get pretty excited for this Blackstar release. ('._.)
>>
Bowie / Ryuichi Sakamoto collab album when?
>>
Blackstar is up there with Ashes to Ashes.
>>
ziggy stardust is for gay redditcore dadrockers

I never knew how much I wanted this until now.

Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence is a movie with Bowie and music by Sakamoto
>>
>>60724815
It's been my dream album for a long time.

>>60724847
I said collab album. Ideally, instrumentals by Sakamoto and vocals by Bowie.

Considering they know each other from MCML, I always thought it seemed like the perfect setup for it.
>>
>>60720999
This.
Glad to see another anon on here think "Heroes" is his best

>>
>>60724956

They undoubtedly crossed paths but there was probably some reason they weren't compatible. Bowie was open to collboration at the time considering his work with Queen, Moroder and John McLaughlin Sakamoto's collab with Sylvian was pretty good in lieu.
>>
>>60724956
Yeah, but Bowie usually writes most of the music and lyrics for his albums. That's probably why they ain't made an album like that and Merry Christmas is all they did
>>
>>60724976
I also think that "Heroes" is his best. Even if you took just the song "Heroes", it's still one of his best songs, but the entire album is just perfect.
>>
>>60725052
Forbidden Colors/MCML with Bowie in the place of Sylvian would be great. Not that I dislike David Sylvian or anything.
>>
>>60725127

Can Low and Heroes be considered distinct works though? They were both recorded and released within a year which is pretty incredible.

Sylvian is basically Bowie Jr anyway, not saying that as a putdown I love Sylvian but it's true. He's obviously heavily influenced by Bowie which is totally cool to be honest family.
>>
>>60725187
He had a reason for grouping them together like he did. They are very similar, but different. If he had wanted them to be one work, he would have released them as such.
>>
>>60725261

Yes but they are very similar. Lodger is quite distinct sounding Bowie totally took the reigns on that.

3. Aladdin Sane
4. Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)
5. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars

Good album. Really how can anyone say that Bowie has a best album? He is like a totally different artist every couple of years.
>>
>>60725354
Go to bed Ian
>>
>>60725295
I think that they're similar for very obvious reasons, but I think if you really listen to them both one right after the other, they both do have very distinct sounds to them. To me it doesn't play as one album.

"Heroes" is much, I guess softer you could say, a little bit dreamier, with the electronic experimentation at the end of it being much darker sounding.

Low is to me, pretty crisp, guitars used extensively and in the foreground, the beginning parts of it much more rock-ish, with the second half being very experimental as well, but not nearly as dark as I feel tracks like V-2 Schneider or Neuköln are. Low is warmer.
>>
>>60725354
That and Pin Ups are the obvious black sheep of his 70s discography.
>>
hey pham I tried to get into David Bowie but I still can't fully grasp why he's considered a classic.

I like Blackstar, Changes, Space Oddity and Oh You Pretty Things.
>>
>>60725700
Well, simply he's a classic because
A) he's played around with several different styles, some of them being very new/experimental at the time, and most of them being done very well.
B) Ever since he started, he's pretty consistently put out what could be called great music. There are albums that are pretty mediocre, I will admit even being a huge Bowie fan, but out of what is about to be 25 full studio albums, I'd say maybe 5 of those could be considered pretty medicore/borderline bad. Everything else, including his most recent output, is either really really great, or at the very least completely solid and in most cases something new.
>>
>>60725700
Good start, now listen to him coked out of his head with Luther Vandross singing back up.

Low is top tier

I have no idea what BlackStarr is trying to accomplish
>>
1) Low
2) Heroes (really though, it would be No. 1 if it wasn't for V2 Schneider)
3) Station to Station
4) Hunky Dorey
5) Aladdin Sane
6) Space Oddity
cbf doing more

Pretty good tier. I love Japan.

What's the general consensus on Never Let Me Down?

It's nowhere near some of what's generally thought of as his best work, but I really enjoy it for some reason. It might be down to the fact that I somehow completely overlooked it for years and was pleasantly surprised when I found it (in a similar way to how I feel about Tonight).
>>
I think Station to Station and Low are both the best.

You guys don't like Ziggy?

He allegedly came up with the riff just to annoy Jagger. Also he used this coke spoon in the studio.

What would you lads consider the absolute essential Bowie albums?
>>
>>60729741
His 70s discography.
>>
>>60729758
The entire decade? There's not a single bad one in the lot?
>>
>>60729786
Pin-Ups is a covers album. Young Americans is a soul album. They are the black sheep but they are stellar. David Bowie won the seventies by a mile.
>>
>>60729786
All the stuff in between Ziggy Stardust and Station to Station is patchy.
>>
>>60729810
filthy casual.
>>
>>60729678

I saw that spoon at the IS exhibition. That riff sounds pretty simple but it's a bit tricky to play especially for the whole song. I think that's why he changed the song for the last tour.
>>
>>60726437
Pleb
>>
>>60729808

I love Pin Ups, it's a snapshot of some great bands from the scene which incubated Bowie, and the songs are all played with style. At the time it was pretty common to perform covers there was no big deal about original vs cover, especially considering most artists were only performers. Singer-songwriter was and still is an exceptional skill.

Let's Dance is still an awesome album. i can always have a good time listening to it. In most of his music there's a haunting spooky feeling of unease even when it's a boppy foot tapper, and usually a catchy tune. How does he even? :3
>>
An interesting aspect of Bowie's 70's streak is that he also spread the love to Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Lulu and Mott The Hoople, pretty much gifting all of those acts with his talent. That's cocaine for you.

I'm amazed that he actually kicked the coke habit and continued to put out even more detailed albums in the process. Anyone else would have died and he kicked the habit at the mythical age of 27, when everyone else died.
