what /mu/ think about this album and others Dean's work?
>>
>>60720662
i once dreamt i was dean blunt

the morning after i woke up fucked up
>>
I honestly don't get why people worship the dude and his work. Not that he's bad, but none of his solo work or work in Hype Williams had any sort of effect on me.
>>
>>60720662
I once read in an interview somewhere that when he worked in the food markets in London, he used to put usb sticks containing his music into pieces of fruit that he sold to customers

Doesn't get much more based than that
>>
>>60720662
i don't see the appeal beyond wishing to cultivate a certain image for yourself
>>
>>60720662
I personally like his recent Lp Black Metal, I think he is interesting musician even though his singing can get rough at some times.
>>
I just listened to The Redeemer less than a week ago and I love it. I need to get high and listen to it at some point.
>>
I like it a lot
>>
>steals other songs
>loops some parts and sings over
>suddenly he's considered a good artist

why is this allowed?
>>
>>60722521
because it gets pretentious write ups on tinymixtapes
>>
>>60722521
>>60722552
where can i see your music?
>>
>>60722629
dean blunt blows and "let me see you do better" is a shitty non-argument
>>
>>60722629
>the "you have to be an artist to criticize art" meme
>>
>>60722521
yeah sampling is STEALING

His work resonates with me on a deep level that I don't always feel and can only sometimes explain to friends who give me weird looks whenever I play his stuff. His music makes me think a lot. His voice is the main thing people tend to hate, but I think the deadpan way he emotes really dimensionalizes his work, considering how deliberate every sound is. It's pretty much solidified my interest in liking voices with character versus singing traditionally "well". That he shares conceptual strains with 0pn as far as deconstructing pop tropes and has even worked with ppl like arca I also really dig, because their work means a lot to me too. But on a visceral level, I just like his arrangements and think even the more abstract stuff is stimulating. So yeah, Hype Williams stuff, The Redeemer, Stone Island, Black Metal, the Babyfather stuff and all the weird shit on youtube, Dean's probably one of my favorite artists around.

Also he introduced me to Joanne Robertson and her work, and she's a fucking angel, for that alone he's GOAT. her tracks tend to be my favorites.

>>60721232

that's something inga did, not dean
but they're both based
>>
>>60722664
>>60722651
your criticism is worthless, at least he's created something that resonates and has value to multiple people unlike your shitty "min-reviews" on /mu/ which do nothing but give yourself self-masturbatory elitist feelings, aww how sad is that :(

>>60722806
go to bed dean it's 2 in the morning

nice analysis of good ol deano, he certainly appeals to me in the fact that he's just a complete oddball and probably makes up half the shit he's doing on the go or spontaneously. I know alot of his appeal is just based on aesthetic but his music just puts me on a different wavelength and has this generally sedating effect on me. I read somewhere else that the only album he listens to is Whats the Story Morning Glory? idk if he just makes this shit up but he really is one bizarre fellow
>>

>the "you said something that was right so i call you the artist i was wrong about" meme

what a voice
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBa4mI5KWdA

apparently she has a new album coming soon too if this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b31XuImfuUg is anything to go by
>>
>>60722859

He definitely make shit up. He's been pranking journalists since the Hype Williams days.

>he's just a complete oddball and probably makes up half the shit he's doing on the go

yeah, this is definitely part of the appeal as well, and why I have no hesitation calling him an artist. Dude just does, you get the sense that he doesn't deliberate or overthink all that much, there's just a tonal consistency regardless of the pieces or fragments of music he uses and recontextualizes at any given moment.

like, I don't understand this >>60722521 argument, I really think Dean's blatant use of certain samples is really interesting, it's not as if he's monetarily profiting off of it. It's like a hip hop ethos but stripped of any delusions of fame or upward mobility. So, he doesn't so much "flip" a sample as much as recontextualize, like on the sixth track of stone island? that fucking stravisnky sample looped with that one ominous guitar twang invests the song with so much drama, more than if he had like cut up the track and added drums or anything like that to distance the piece from its source.

In my mind, she's one of the most underrated musicians around, and Black Moon Days is one of my favorite albums of 2015. Her songs cut me right to the core, and placed in the middle of Dean's vague emotional shadowplay, they're fucking daggers.

Listened to it once, thought it was incredibly boring desu. Almost none of the tracks caught my attention.
>>
>>60723100
fair enough if people want to bash on shit for using samples but I feel it can often add so much to music. Looping a sample into a piece where its in a completely different context to the original it was extracted from is infinitely appealing to me and of course its not as if he's raking in the dollar for doing so. Anyway you hit the nail on the head with your evaluation mate

I guess if people are put off by postmodernism in general, I understand, but yeah, I eat that shit up.
However, that being said, I will admit that the more straightfoward tracks tend to be my favorite.

Where do you think he's gonna go from here? Black Metal was simultaneously a send up of modern hip hop and a rough trade 90s indie pop album, and his work as babyfather and the uk2uk tape have only gone further into hip hop sounds. Might we get a full on Babyfather album?

wasn't there also supposed to be another Hype Williams album soon?
>>
>>60723420
no idea about the hype williams album. Honestly I hope he just goes off the scale and makes something really esoteric and experimental. I doubt it would alienate much of his fanbase as I mean we've gotten to be pretty open to anything if we've stuck with him thus far

Have you ever seen him live? I haven't but I feel it would be a really special gig if I got the chance

I found out last year that he performed in my town about a couple months before I got into him, was a pretty bad feeling. hopefully i catch him at some point, but itd more just to catch the vibe in person, as it's usually just him performing karoake like a weirdo on stage by himself

his work overall lacks cohesion.everything he does is just improv really. He's advertised mostly as an performance artist when he does live shows and that fits him perfectly

https://vimeo.com/7220106 here's an interview he did long long ago

makes you think if he is the luckiest bloke on the planet or everything was planned
>>
>>60723420
>Hype Williams album soon?
>no idea about the hype williams album.

there have been a few hints that he's releasing either a HW album or solo with hyperdub early next year
>>
>>60723639
I'd actually just pay to watch him chill out on the couch with that fine lady while his music blares in the background and that light show keeps the atmosphere head bobbing and groovy af like in that Mersh video

i'm guessing this https://twitter.com/hyperdub/status/651742784618106880 is an art installation but it could align with a new record, the second hyperdub tweet reinforcing that possiblity
>>
>>60723692

cool video, had never seen it before.

i think he definitely knows me more than he lets on.

but that's possibly me just projecting my fear of not having the whole innate artist bug thing
>>
>>60723848
who knows really, main theme in dean's work is humor first everything else second

dean himself could have posted that second tweet using the hyperdub twitter.
>>
>>60723900
yeah he's a con man

he's kind of sonically interesting, but i honestly don't understand what he's trying to do with his music. anyone care to explain?
>>
>>60724086

what have you heard?
>>
>>60724086

everything after the redeemer
has been about london gang violence and his critic on black americans

in the wire interview he said. he hates afropunk and kanye west trying to reclaim dead white genres and things. say thats not progression. thats going backwards and something about how disrespectful liberal lefts are
he might be conservative idk?

this might be the closest thing to him revealing his aganda on whats hes about https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyzE5QH_x2I

are you retarded he is socialist/ anarchist. anti-american, anti-white, anti-black stereotpye, anti money, anti capitalism, anti-"art world" artist. really awesome artist commenting on issues and basically confronting his audience in a really powerful way yet most dont realize he is mocking them.

his new mixtape is great. it's a lot more straightforward than anything else he's done, but it proves to me his competence as a producer. i enjoy his other work but after so many releases built around the simple looping of samples, i was beginning to think that he was using his lofi, minimalistic aesthetic as a crutch.

here we can see him produce to his full potential outside the confines of a minimalist approach

also that escrow verse is fire
>>
>>60726014
i like his take on trap music & mixing it with spoken word uk rap that he's sampled off youtube
