A band whose coverage I really hate, though, is Deafheaven. They're a fundamentally skilled, but relatively unremarkable atmospheric black metal band. Elitist metalheads (deathmetal.org) claim that they're a pop band dressed up as something else, and the Pitchfork sphere claim that they're somehow revitalising or going beyond black metal. I'd be willing to wager that these two equally narrow-minded responses are born out of the same thing; the fact that the band are sexy USians rather than beardy Norwegians.

I know what you're getting at, though. Music has the capacity to annoy and irritate just as much a it ha the capacity to bring joy or sadness. The only circumstance where this is not true is in the case of musicians who are culturally ubiquitous enough that exposure to their work is esssentially unavoidable. Most of /mu/, however, is much too self-aware to ever bitch about them.
