It's very possible. See the artistic sellout, when an artist change his style to appeal to the mainstream, usually forced by his/her/their label.

The sales are quite low these days, so any decent way to earn some money is acceptable. It's not personal, it's just business. As long the music stays great, I don't have a problem with that.
