Scaruffi's claiming to mirror the rhetoric of others - he's essentially saying "Other people think 'the Beatles are the greatest band of all time because they sold more than everyone else' when the last bit isn't even technically true, let alone the first bit."
Of course the silly thing about this is Scaruffi's wrong - no one cites the Beatles' popularity as the sole reason for why they're the best. Whether they actually were the biggest sellers is unimportant. Yes, the point is invalid, but not for the reason you're suggesting.
