Does anyone know of a working link for Penis Torture Chamber? The only one in the archive is on mutracker. Preferably a torrent because fuck downloading 12hrs of music from mega, but I'll take what I can get

Had no idea pharm was such a slut.
Question for /noise/, should pop and noise ever mix? Shoegaze doesn't count btw, it's basically just loud rock.

>penis torture chamber

Why must all noise-artists be so edgy?
>>
>>60557695
Somebody posted a tape here the other day that was HN mixed with jpop samples, that was pretty cool. Probably not what you mean though.

What would be your ideal topic addressed in noise? Personally I appreciate such deviant/racist/etc. motives in noise since the music corresponds to those extremes. I find e.g. Hijokaidan more edgy for trying to combine noise music with dull themes such as furniture or day-to-day-life.
Plus they're a good pleb-filter :^)
>>
>>60554882
yet to be shuffled
>>
>>60557882
I don't know. Maybe there shouldn't be a fixed topic? Is it impossible for harsh noise to express happiness for example?
I just find that the listening experience often trancends feelings of deviancy, racism and edginess.
>>
>>60557951
There is happy noise though ('While you were out' comes to mind).

Btw those topics don't always get covered in the same vein, as one artist displays it in a very sterile way without any judgement (which sometimes can be interpreted as criticism of such), other artist get indulged in these and offer they're input and stance for mentioned topic. So there's no black and white by pining the artist down just by his chosen topic.
And lastly do you think that sexual fetishes/political beliefs/brutality should have no musical forum to be channeled through? Noise is fairly underground so it does make sense that people cover these images rather here than on a national pop album or something? Your position seems like you'd want to forbid artists to address those topics at all because they could seem "egdy", which doesn't go along with my sense of artistic freedom.

If you're into HNW: Vomir has no fixed topic for his releases (most of the time the cover art is provided by the label) as his walls have no meaning.
>>
>>60558020
I did not mean to come across as if I wanted to forbid artists to adress these topics. You must excuse my use of the meme-term "edgy". Of course these matters should be adressed, and considerig the present state of the world I don't think any moral limitations should be significant in relation what can (and must) be represented in artistic form.
I was, on the other hand, under the impression that these topics had undergone a sort of inflation, and that certain topics may have become fixed to certain types of music and so determiming the expression.
Thanks to your post I see that's not the case.
And thanks for recs!
>>

How's the noise scene in your areas?
>>
>>60558199
I know one artist based around where i live, but does shows in the other parts of NZ. I'm in Auckland where there is a metal/hardcore scene in the underground, but no noise one. Good thing I enjoy bits and pieces of metal.
>>
>>60558199
Couple noise rock and ambient/drone type things spread throughout the state, but not much otherwise. I've been working on a bit of a harsher project lately, probably won't even bother trying to get it out there locally when I'm comfortable enough with it to do so.

Connecticut, btw. If anyone knows of any shows pls

It's not edgy, it's a concept. The project is about extreme male-sub sexual fetishism and a blunt title that has both power and humor to it is appropriate and effective. Once you start discarding buzzwords to describe everything different you see your horizon will widen a bit more.

A couple short videos a friend of mine took of my noise set in New Jersey on Saturday. Some other people who played that night include ASPS (newer project of the guys who ran the Bone Tooth Horn cassette label) and Drums Like Machine Guns. It was a pretty great night, imo.

>>60557882
Dull themes have just as much merit, as it conjures an atmosphere by focusing on something so blunt or insignificant. Even those might correspond to an artist's interests - they don't necessarily need to be about a deep theme or an idea. Steven Stapleton said in an interview with David Keenan that he used the bondage imagery on so much of his early work like Chance Meeting because he thought it was bizarre that anyone would be interested in such a thing sexually. You have to think of it in terms of the artist's intent. Most of the time, especially with artists who are actually serious about their work, the concepts explored are not going to be there just to be edgy or stupid or pretentious, and interest can come in many different facets.
>>
>>60560711
My point was that I wouldn't call any of those artists edgy, as I despise the inflation of that term, but if I actually had to call something in the noise-scene edgy (meaning like going actively against the grain) then I'd rather point at acts like Hijokaidan than Prurient.

>>60560813
Well, I agree. I actually don't care at all which imagery an artist in noise chooses as long as the music is appealing to me. If the subject interests me or I see an enhancement of the overall atmosphere, I appreciate it more but doesn't change my opinion on the actual music.
Apparently my post was worded in a too confusing way; this isn't my first language so bear with me.
>>
>>60560892
Oh, ok. They are "edgy" because they go against usual topics? Somebody from Boris said that noise is japanese blues. In my opinion it's rather natural for them to use mundane activities as their aesthetic, because they are surrounded by tacky pop, overcrowded and noisy cities.
I really don't know how much prurient was exposed at the topic that he deals with but I bet hijokaidan was exposed at mundanity(is it even a word?) a lot more.
>>
>>60560782
I listened to this year's s/t, his split with BLJ, his collab with Auditor, Death Van and several tracks on youtube. Most of it was just really unspectacular.
>>
>>60560954
I don't like this discussion as this corners me into the statement that I find Hijokaidan edgy. I don't think that at all and now given your explanation of the Japanese mindset I totally get Hijokaidan's approach and would refrain from thinking they were going against the grain.

I want my noise to focus on validation/appeal to authority/peer approval.

I obviously want to focus on the negatives of such things. I also want to work on themes regarding the down side of self validation as well.

I plan on doing a 7" (in terms of length, not format) this Christmas to express how I really feel about the Holidays. The feigned niceness and the obligation to be nice during the season when in reality it is just a pervasive reminder for what I find arbitrary in Western Culture.

This is going to sound convoluted but the general idea is how society expects you to be 'okay' or 'doing well'. I am trying to articulate that I am not any of these things but that it "okay" that I am not. The threshold of awfulness is actually a preferred state of mind.

Regarding validation though, I really want my material (lyrically to focus) on an egalitarian dissatisfaction (actually ambivalence) with...everything. Like I think Nazi's are just as arbitrary as protesters in the Occupy movement.

Regarding Occupy and validation though, I have some more pop structured tunes that focus on the idea that a lot of people were at occupied just to get laid. I'm not applying this to a moral high ground, rather, trying to articulate people's motives are not what they seem AND man will do things just to find some sort of sick validation.

Feedback and criticism of such topics welcomed.

No I have nothing to show for this.

currently listening to merzbow's dharma while watching "walking in tokyo" on mute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgQt2OHUtKM

it looks really nice, clean, orderly, but also boring. i wonder if merzbow is inspired by the boring world around him to be as intense as possible with his music. i used to think one would have to be on some kind of drugs to make noise music. now i think it makes perfect sense for it to emerge out of a sober mind, a mind faced with boredom day by day. a drug is hardly stimulating enough, you need to be pummeled with sound.

merzbow actually does say things similar to what you just typed in interviews. he says that he uses everyday sounds around him to create what he does but also partially he wants to drown out the "noise" that his country makes that he is ashamed of. there are also the scummy aspects of society like hari kari videos that he makes a movie about in paradise lost and the gang corruption of japan that he focused on in the mid-90's.

I know there's noise scenes in Portland and Eugene. I don't know much about them. Apparently there's a noise scene in Salem too.

Portland here. There's a bunch of noise stuff up here but not much of what I've found has been straight-up harsh noise. There's a monthly show I go to that's a random assembly of about ten artists, but it's usually like four or five guys doing random noodling on euroracks, three or four guys doing bleepy or industrial dance sets, and one or two harsh noise acts. It's a pretty fun show and it's free, but it usually doesn't scratch the harshness itch for me.

So the guy was just like
>Yo Vomir I'm going to make some blast beats, you lay down a wall and no matter how crazy these blasts get DO NOT LET THE WALL MOVE
>Vomir: Yeah that won't be a problem

The duality of the sounds juxtaposing, while imagining them recording together creating a force so powerful it becomes funny. Kind of like hitting yourself in the leg over and over again causes you to laugh.

But yeah one of my favorites of the year. Tons of repeated listens come this December.

>>
>>60584736
I've never been there either. Been to a lot of venues in the area but never that one.

I would pay in advance. All my shows have been selling out lately so I'm always happy I paid ahead.

You driving? Public transit to that part of Brooklyn is a dirty gasey whore. No there is no other way to put it.
>>
>>60584940
Nah, I don't drive sadly. Metro North ends up being much cheaper even if I did, though.

I mean, I fucking hate the G train but if that's my only option, I'll take it long before I take a cab anywhere. I used to live in Bayside so I'm pretty much used to the lack of adequate public transit thing at this point, just need to plan ahead is all.
>>
>>60585008
I started driving cause my shows end just late enough for me to miss the last train out of Penn Station (Jersey here) but too early for me to have to wait 'Jesus' Dick long' for the first train to leave in the morning.

Ha, you're like Toby McGuire in "The Ice Storm" trying to get back from Grand Central (not really but that's the first thing that comes to mind)
>>
>>60585299
Eh, last train back home is around 2am and even if I miss it, there's bound to be a bar somewhere I can hole up in until 4 or 5, even if it means stumbling home drunk at 7am. Pretty sure Jimmy's Corner in Times Square stays open that late, and their drinks are cheap as fuck too.

>>
>>60603195
Idk about the others but NBND to me means that I will play each single day a record I didn't know before. So I'd be allowed listening to any additional music. Might be technically wrong but that's how I'll play it.
>>
>>60603195
I will field this question. No, it's incidental therefore not disqualified. However, you do get bonus points if you avoid such things and become the noise.

Just remember brother if you want to leave your human form and become noise, listening to anything other than noise will only slow the process.

hunt 'em down one by one, all there is to it
at least the ones that got ripped

speaking of SR, i really appreciate zen's practice of periodically reissuing older parts of CL's catalog which are particularly difficult and expensive to get a hold of now
more labels should do that

i hope he does "it's OK to say no" soon
>>
>>60572784
hm, yeah. in a recent interview he admitted to liking some pop music, apparently, but when pressed to name names he smiled and said that's not necessary for the interview. so elusive, heh.

i wonder about masami's motivation these days. obviously he is sustaining his lifestyle by doing shows and albums but i wonder if he sees his place in noise music history and recognizes the need to continue until his last breaths. he must have began the whole project, decades ago, as he says in a very conceptual mindset, reacting to other music he heard around him, but i wonder if decades of exploring and exploiting noise has brought him closer to ordinary pop music again, sort of coming full circle? i notice that when i make bad noise music, that just doesn't work for whatever reason, i usually become disillusioned with the whole idea entirely, but then i'll hear some prime merzbow again and be totally blown away.

i think people really misunderstand noise when they say anyone can create it or that it requires no talent. a lot of merzbow's stuff has a subtlety and surreal depth that i think is very hard to come by just "making noise" as people tend to think of it. particular his "merzbient" style stuff, like a lot of the merzbox, earlier works. there is a sense of flow and movement, like a stream, without ever really becoming boring or repetitive, new elements are introduced, new sounds that have a hypnotic effect.

can you imagine some time in the future when masami has passed away and we just have this epic discography remaining? he will be seen as the grandfather and grandwizard of noise music, an absolute legend. i can't imagine his stuff ever seeming old fashioned or inappropriate for future times, it will probably always have a special place of difference among other music.

what i really wish for is english translations/publications of his written works... all of them. it kills me knowing he's written books and i can't read them
