How do I decide what genre of music I want to create? Its fucking impossible, one month im on the lo-fi folk train and the next im deep in the dream-pop shoegaze shit, im poor and autistic so should I just go with the lo-fi stuff until I can actually afford 100 pedals?
i have the same problem

just make what you feel like making. Don't be categorized. I make freak folk stuff one day, then vaporwave the next, and ambient stuff occasionally.
i created a new genre a few months ago, but no one gives a shit about it ask me anything

Personally I don't consciously try to make any certain kind/genre of music. At the very least I know it will be guitar centric because that's what instrument I play, but whether it comes out as jazz, rock, punk or whatever depends on what I come up with when I sit down and play. And then it might turn into something different when I start arranging it

man i ask myself the same thing all the damn time.
especially since i do edm stuff im really bad about trend hopping (now i wanna do trap! now i wanna do deep house! now i wanna do future house!)
and like, i know the answer is to just create something that allows you to express yourself and dont worry about what genre it is but its fucking hard. especially since i dont even try to put any expression in it since it IS just dance music. idk im looking at it all wrong i guess.
