people often judge me for still naming Lost Prophets as one of my main favourite bands, but i think its the art itself that matters - not the person behind it.
Also, i liked the music before it was revealed what kind of demon Watkins has become, why should that change my opinion on the music itself?

but Phil Spector was a huge part of most of the art he created. all those Phillies records singles - "Be My Baby", "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)", "Unchained Melody", "River Deep - Mountain High" - they're all completely imbued by his personal style and there's no good way to separate those records from the man himself. Spector's "Wall of Sound" technique is insanely famous, every musician in his time wanted to evoke that in their own art.
he was a damn fine producer, possibly the best there's ever been. he was also a creep who liked to randomly pull guns on people. so it goes - his art's good enough to exist apart from that. but there's no way you can listen to a Phil Spector record (knowing who he is) and not realize it.

This doesn't work very well because Lost Prophets are shit. A better (non musical) example would be Roman Polanski, who raped a 13 year old but he also has made some of the greatest films of all time.
Should I stop watching his fantastic and influental art because he's a horrible human? Personally I'd say no because his films are great. I'd never support him financially (so I always illegally stream his films) but I can't deny the raw talent.

Music centers around emotional connection with the listener. A singer intoning a melody to get you to an emotional vista that they are personally making for you. I don't want any emotional connection with a man who raped a baby. I've always been a very empathetic person. Even when I was a child I was very concerned with the suffering of animals, I have been a vegan since I was 10. I am also a music fan, and that often conflicts with my moral and highly empathetic nature. What do I make of the Beatles knowing Lennon was a homophobe, a hypocrite and an abuser?
