what's so different about this than standard black metal? It's a bit more dynamic with the metric and more atmospheric but that's it.

oh, you mean people who have never listened to metal before can come in and judge what the new precedent of metal should be? I don't like the album because it fucking sucks and pathetic little indie boys come in and act like they're tough shit, when they're ignorant as hell.

She can't compose. Much like those in OP. The only "transcendence" in their music is when they play in time together.
>>
>>60516047
>Much like those in OP
I went to Columbia and was a philosophy major. I also studied avant-garde composition there with Tristan Murail, one of the inventors of spectralism. For a while my plan was to either be a professional philosopher or a "serious music" composer.
>>
>>60515646
Experimental isn't even a genre you fucking faglord
>>
It's a mediocre album that people overrate so they seem to have an eclectic taste and dismiss any criticism as being afraid of change.

>>60516103
how is this relevant?
>>
>>60516391
He said "they can't compose" so I proved him objectively wrong.
Tristan Murail isn't some obscure name, pleb.
>>
>>60515926
apart from the fact that she just isn't very good, it's because relapse just took this vapid nyc indie chick (look her up on youtube or something) with no real interest in metal, pretended she was danish, and patronizingly tried to shove her on the metal scene as the FUTURE OF METAL

People dislike it because they cannot seperate the art from the artist. HHH is a pretentious cunt, but at least Liturgy backs up what he goes on about. Both this and TAW are great albums.
>>
>>60516521
notice she has no accent here but she does in any myrkur-related video
>>
metal for people who don't like metal so that they can patronize people who like metal
>>
>>60516543
this album is really disorienting for non metal listeners, something like deafheaven is much more entry level, stop spouting memes.
>>
>>60516521
That's still just "she wears clothes I don't like" as an argument.

>>60516530
Ok that's sloppy. She has a slight accent but yes it's much less thick than in recent Myrkur interviews I just googled.
>>
>>60516573
they're american
it can't get more entry level than that.
>>
I enjoy the album but I enjoy even more the discussion the band brings up everytime they are mentioned. They will remembered for at least being provocative and controversial if anything
>>
Essential socially acceptable metal album for non-metal listeners to feel superior to metal listeners regardless if it's actually good core.
>>
>>60516487
>>60516510
then at best you can say "I don't like it, but others do. It's subjective."
>>
it's amazing how angry metal people get when this album is brought up.

none of the people in this thread even said WHY is was bad they just started saying "THE PEOPLE WHO LISTEN TO THIS ARE" or other arguments around image

metal is for stupid people, if you're pretending to be intelligent you better listen to Mozart
>>
>>60516770
complexity doesn't make an album good but least it makes it harder for people not familiar with the genre to enjoy it. The Liturgy fans = metal casuals statment is stupid.
>>
This album is well liked by non-metal fan because for them it looks like something "Experimental" or "Brand New", when metal fans have actually knowledge about the genre and know that it is pretty insipid and forgettable compared to millions of other black metal albums.
Of course, some Liturgy fans will not accept this truth, because they think they have all the knowledge in the world, and I pity them.
You can enjoy this album, I don't even hate it and there are legit good tracks on it, but it's not revolutionary in absolutely any way, nor is it "transcendental".
>>
>>60516792
not what I'm saying, stop shitposting

>>

>avoiding actual discussion this much
wew lad, I would really like to hear your actual reasons for dislinking the album instead of just the shitposting
>>
>>60516806
>The Liturgy fans = metal casuals

never said this, a metal casual would be someone who listens to Slipknot or any other mainstream metal band. It for people who thinks normal metal is stupid (ie indies/hipsters/pitchforkdrones) but still want the thrill of something that indie music can't give, also because indie music doesn't exist anymore and its whole subculture is based of vague liberalism and a quasi-colonial need to appropriate other subcultures (not only metal, see hip-hop or EDM)
>>
>>60516837
Every band have its own "style".
Liturgy uses a lot of repetition on some tracks, as well as weird sound effects on some tracks.
The riffs are pretty similar of those of Krallice or Altar Of Plagues if you want.
But what I meant is that nothing they've done is "that" revolutionary. They've only been using, as I said before, a lot of repetition and weird sound effects.
If you're looking for genuinely avant-garde or experimental bands, that have been bringing a whole new style to the Black Metal genre, try Ved Buens Ende, Qulielfi, Murmuure...
>>

The first link is a lot like Aesthethica actually...the problem I have with it though is that it came out the same year as Aesthethica. Is there an earlier example?

The other two have little or nothing to do with Aes IMO.
>>
>>60517188
As I said, every band have its own sound and it's really hard to find a specific example of a band that sounds exactly like another one.

You can look in earlier Krallice releases, but they don't sound as much as Aesthetica than Diotima.
Also check out the Cascadian BM scene, you may find what you want.
I'm not an expert about american BM though, I can't help you more than that.
>>
>>60517272
It's cool, and to be fair I'm not really a HUGE Aes fan. Since release I basically thought "Cool! Some rock with really nice chord progressions and really interesting rhythmic variation." I've been a big fan of TAW though.
>>
Saw them live and they were really underwhelming, the drummer was the only redeeming aspect of their set. Lightning Bolt completely blew them out of the water right after Liturgy's set and made them seem so forgettable.

I really hate this meme
>>
>>60516689

Isn't that the essence of what you're saying as well. Are you trying to establish an objective method of evaluating the integrity of a certain person, not based on the products of said person, but rather on the credentials?

That don't ring right.

deafheaven is actually good but liturgy is shit

Same. Metal was the genre that got me into music and is still a lot of what I listen to, but honestly I get tired of the genre because there's so much samey, mediocre shit. It's almost like all of the bands that are "untrve" or whatever (>>60518348) are consistently the ones that actually bring something unique and interesting to the genre.
