Sufjan helped produce that. Interesting trend.

Out of all mainstream radio folk, its the most acceptable. Not sure what he's on about. On release /mu/ quite liked it actually.

Depression sure is not cool, but the instrumentation and Sufjan's voice soothe me like a mother's kiss

That's why I was so confused by people freaking out over Carrie and Lowell.
Don't get me wrong Carrie and Lowell has a very special energy to it and I love it for that. However its not the first time Sufjan opened up.
Yes, Carrie and Lowell filled in a gap in Sufjan's history that explains a lot.
However Seven Swans was equally intimate. It was just about other things.
They're both great though. Its just Sufjan opened up over a decade ago and people are just now respecting him for it.

Imagine listening to that during your morning commute, sipping your coffee, heat on full blast, ice crystals on the windshield. It almost makes up for the hours of sleep I missed the night before.

eh, disagree. pretty much all of his music has been personal and "opening up," it's just that C&L is the first to "be personal and open up" about ONE specific topic (his mother's death), and as a result was musically distinct from his other works (simple and straight-forward), which makes it stand out and seem "deeper"
don't get me wrong i love him and i love the album more than anything but it's pretty obvious why C&L has the impact that it does. yes he was deeply personal and honest in a lot of previous work, but this is the first time he's dropping everything and being 100% honest and without ornamentation about his feelings. that makes it hit a LOT harder.
